Surgeon General Issues Call to Combat Health Misinformation in Digital Age
Health misinformation has transcended social media to infiltrate search engines, retail websites, and even mainstream media outlets, posing a significant threat to public health initiatives aimed at preventing illness and promoting wellness across the United States.
In response to this growing crisis, U.S. Surgeon General Vivek Murthy, MD, has issued a formal advisory outlining how healthcare organizations, technology companies, and other stakeholders can collaborate to create a healthier information ecosystem.
“Health misinformation is a serious threat to public health,” Dr. Murthy stated in the advisory. “It can cause confusion, sow mistrust, harm people’s health and undermine public health efforts. Limiting the spread of health misinformation is a moral and civic imperative that will require a whole-of-society effort.”
The American Medical Association (AMA) has reinforced this message by adopting new policy recommendations aimed at combating medical misinformation. These recommendations encourage social media platforms to strengthen content moderation policies, enhance monitoring systems, and improve recommendation algorithms to reduce the spread of false medical information.
The AMA policy also calls for greater collaboration between social media companies and health experts to support the dissemination of accurate health information and establish partnerships with news agencies to expand public access to reliable medical information.
The COVID-19 pandemic has exacerbated the problem, creating what the World Health Organization and United Nations have termed an “infodemic” – an overwhelming volume of information that makes it difficult for people to distinguish fact from fiction.
“Amid all this information, many people have also been exposed to health misinformation: information that is false, inaccurate or misleading according to the best available evidence at the time,” Dr. Murthy wrote. This confusion has led some individuals to reject crucial public health measures like masking, physical distancing, and vaccination, while driving others toward unproven treatments.
Physicians nationwide report facing a barrage of patient questions stemming from rumors and misinformation, particularly regarding COVID-19 vaccines. To address this, the AMA has launched educational webinar series featuring experts who debunk myths and provide evidence-based guidance for healthcare providers.
The Surgeon General’s advisory outlines three key approaches for health professionals and organizations to combat misinformation:
First, healthcare providers should be proactive with patients and the public. This includes taking time to understand individual knowledge, beliefs, and values while listening with empathy. “When addressing health concerns, consider using less technical language that is accessible to all patients. Find opportunities to promote patient health literacy on a regular basis,” the advisory states.
Second, health professionals must reclaim technology and media platforms. Professional associations are encouraged to equip their members to serve as subject-matter experts for journalists and effectively communicate peer-reviewed research online.
Third, healthcare organizations should engage directly with communities. Health systems are advised to collaborate with community members when developing public health messages, while associations should offer training for clinicians on addressing misinformation in culturally sensitive ways.
The advisory also details specific actions for technology companies, journalists, research institutions, funders, and government agencies, emphasizing that combating misinformation requires a coordinated effort across sectors.
“Every single person can do their part to confront misinformation,” Dr. Murthy concluded. “But it’s not just an individual responsibility. We need institutions to recognize that this issue is their moral and civic responsibility, too, and that they are accountable.”
As the digital information landscape continues to evolve, the fight against health misinformation represents a critical public health challenge requiring sustained commitment from individuals and institutions alike.
