Supreme Court Rejects Plea Addressing Misinformation Concerns

In a significant development, the Supreme Court has declined to hear a petition seeking action against those allegedly spreading misinformation in the Tirumala laddu controversy, citing ongoing criminal investigations into the matter.

During Friday’s proceedings, a bench headed by Chief Justice Surya Kant and Justice Joymalya Bagchi questioned the petitioner’s expertise in the matter, directing them to approach the relevant authorities instead. “Why you have become an expert… Go and tell the authorities,” the bench remarked to the petitioner’s counsel.

The court emphasized that the petition appeared to be an attempt to bolster defense arguments in an existing criminal case where investigations are already underway. “We are not inclined to entertain this petition, especially when the investigation is going on,” the bench stated, adding that the investigating agency would present its findings to the appropriate court in due course.

This development follows the Supreme Court’s October 4 decision to establish a five-member independent Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe allegations that animal fat was used in the preparation of the sacred Tirupati laddus. At that time, the court had clearly indicated it would not allow its chambers to be used as a “political battleground” while acknowledging the need to “assuage the feelings of crores of people” affected by the controversy.

The petition had sought directives for the Andhra Pradesh government to take immediate action against individuals or organizations spreading misinformation through various means including hoardings, posters, and public statements. Additionally, it requested the establishment of an independent monitoring mechanism to maintain law and order and prevent potential mob violence stemming from political or religious provocations.

The bench advised that the petitioner or any interested parties could submit relevant materials in their possession directly to the investigating agency to aid in bringing the investigation to its logical conclusion.

The Tirumala laddu controversy has become a major political flashpoint in Andhra Pradesh. Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu had alleged that animal fat was used in preparing the sacred Tirupati laddus during the previous administration led by Y S Jagan Mohan Reddy, sparking intense political debate across the state. The Tirupati laddu is considered prasadam (sacred food offering) at the renowned Tirumala Venkateswara Temple, one of the world’s most visited religious sites with millions of Hindu devotees.

The ruling Telugu Desam Party (TDP) had circulated what they claimed was laboratory evidence supporting their allegations, while the YSR Congress Party vehemently denied the accusations, characterizing them as “heinous allegations” made purely for political advantage.

Earlier this year, on February 23, the apex court had also refused to restrain a one-member committee appointed by the Andhra Pradesh government from reviewing an independent SIT’s report on the controversy.

The case highlights the sensitive intersection of religion and politics in India, where food offerings at temples hold deep spiritual significance for devotees. The Tirumala laddu, distributed as prasadam at the Venkateswara Temple, is not merely a sweet delicacy but a sacred offering accepted with reverence by millions of Hindu worshippers.

As investigations continue, the controversy remains a contentious issue in Andhra Pradesh’s political landscape, with potential ramifications for both public sentiment and religious practices at one of India’s most revered temples.
