Chatha showed how Google’s AI Overviews repeated dangerous misinformation about cannabis gummies, falsely claiming a product “is free from side effects and therefore safe in every respect” – directly contradicting medical expertise about known risks and side effects.
SEO expert Lily Ray conducted her own test, publishing a blog post about a fictional Google algorithm update that was supposedly finalized “between slices of leftover pizza.” Soon after, both ChatGPT and Google’s AI were presenting this complete fabrication as fact, pizza reference included.
This vulnerability represents a significant regression in information integrity. “People have used hacks and loopholes to abuse search engines for decades,” notes the BBC report, but experts say these AI tools have undone many of the safeguards the tech industry developed over years. The current situation resembles the early 2000s internet, before Google even had a web spam team.
The problem is exacerbated by the authoritative tone these systems use when delivering information. Unlike human experts who might qualify their statements or acknowledge limitations, AI responses often appear definitive, lending false credibility to misinformation.
