Nigeria’s Renewed Hope Ambassadors Launch Campaign to Promote Tinubu’s Reform Agenda

Governor Hope Uzodimma of Imo State convened the leadership of the Renewed Hope Ambassadors in Abuja on Saturday, outlining a nationwide strategy to communicate President Bola Tinubu’s reform initiatives to Nigerians. As Director-General of the newly formed organization, Uzodimma emphasized its mission to educate citizens about the administration’s policies, their necessity, and the benefits beginning to emerge.

“It’s a formal meeting of the leadership of Renewed Hope Ambassadors,” Uzodimma told reporters following the session. “This outfit is designed to create awareness and get citizens to begin to understand the reason for the various reforms introduced by Mr. President, educate them on the necessity to embrace these changes, and inform them of the dividends as they trickle in.”

The governor highlighted several economic indicators suggesting improvement under Tinubu’s administration, including what he described as easing inflation, stabilization of the exchange rate, and growth in foreign exchange reserves. He contrasted the current administration’s approach with previous failed attempts at subsidy removal by past presidents.

Uzodimma pointed to the National Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) as a tangible success story. “As I speak to you, we have over a million students being trained through NELFUND, a government programme. This couldn’t have happened without the various reform policies,” he stated. He also cited a substantial decrease in rice prices, claiming bags that cost nearly N120,000 two years ago are now available for around N50,000.

The initiative comes amid challenging economic conditions in Nigeria, where many citizens continue to struggle with high inflation, currency depreciation, and rising living costs following the removal of fuel subsidies and other economic reforms implemented by the Tinubu administration since taking office in May 2023.

Uzodimma accused opposition groups of spreading misinformation about government policies. “Members of the opposition cannot play politics with everything, including developmental programmes. Their only weapon is misinformation,” he asserted. “If we don’t get up to begin to inform the people properly and rightly, this government will be misunderstood.”

The ambassadors have been instructed to disseminate information to the grassroots level, targeting citizens in markets, motor parks, and other public spaces. Uzodimma provided an example of messaging: “When somebody tells you, ‘The cost of transportation is getting high because of the subsidy removal,’ tell him no. The government has introduced the CNG initiative, replacing buses with CNG-driven vehicles, and the cost of transportation is going down.”

The meeting was attended by prominent political figures, including zonal coordinators from Nigeria’s six geopolitical zones and 36 state coordinators. Deputy Director-General Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State, Gombe State Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya (serving as Secretary), and Deputy Secretary Abiodun Faleke (Governor of Ondo State) were also present.

During his remarks, Governor Sani called for highlighting the Tinubu administration’s achievements alongside subnational efforts, such as improvements to primary healthcare, and ensuring this information reaches grassroots communities. Governor Yahaya stressed the importance of coordination to effectively communicate the administration’s progress, particularly in addressing insecurity in Nigeria’s North-East region.

Uzodimma connected the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) party’s electoral success to the government’s performance. “We have 31 governors of APC and still counting. It means that the government is doing work. You cannot cover light with blankets. Light must be light and must be seen by the people,” he said.

The Renewed Hope Ambassadors initiative represents a strategic communications effort by the administration to build public support for economic reforms that have been controversial among segments of the Nigerian population. How effective this campaign will be in addressing public concerns about the pace and impact of economic changes remains to be seen.
