Reading’s Mayor Eddie Morán moved swiftly Wednesday to dispel rumors spreading across social media platforms regarding alleged immigration enforcement operations in the city, clarifying that what appeared in widely shared footage was actually local law enforcement activity.

In his public statement, Morán explained that video circulating online depicted Berks County Sheriff’s deputies serving a warrant, not U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents conducting raids. City officials confirmed this information directly with the Sheriff’s Office, verifying that no federal immigration enforcement actions were taking place.

“We understand how concerning these images can be when shared without proper context,” Morán said, addressing the community’s anxiety. The clarification comes at a time when immigration enforcement remains a sensitive topic in Reading, which has a significant immigrant population and is one of Pennsylvania’s most diverse cities.

The mayor emphasized that public safety in Reading depends heavily on trust between residents and local government. This trust, he noted, is cultivated through transparent policies and consistent action from city officials.

Morán took the opportunity to reaffirm Reading’s established position on immigration enforcement. “Our Reading Police Department does not enforce federal immigration law,” he stated. “This is not only codified in our city ordinance but has been our long-standing practice.” He stressed that local officers focus exclusively on protecting and serving all community members, regardless of immigration status.

The spread of unverified information about ICE operations has caused concern in numerous communities across the country in recent years. Reading, with its population of approximately 95,000 residents and significant Latino community, has seen similar waves of concern in the past.

Law enforcement experts note that rumors of immigration raids can have serious consequences beyond creating fear. When misinformation spreads, it can lead to decreased cooperation with local police, reluctance to report crimes, and avoidance of essential services like healthcare and education.

Morán warned that such misinformation can severely undermine public safety efforts by creating “unnecessary fear and confusion” throughout the community. He urged residents to verify information through official channels before sharing reports on social media.

The mayor also highlighted a challenge facing local governments nationwide: federal agencies, including ICE, typically do not provide advance notification to cities or states regarding their enforcement operations. This lack of coordination limits local officials’ ability to independently verify rumors about federal activities, leaving communities vulnerable to misinformation.

Berks County has a complicated history with immigration enforcement. Until recently, the county housed one of the few family detention centers for immigrants in the United States. The facility, which operated for nearly two decades, closed in 2023 following years of protests and advocacy from immigrant rights groups.

Community organizations in Reading have been working to provide resources to immigrant residents concerned about enforcement actions. These include legal rights workshops, family preparedness planning, and multilingual information about civil liberties.

Morán concluded his statement by reaffirming his administration’s commitment to maintaining Reading as a safe and united community where all residents can feel protected. City officials have established communication channels for residents seeking verified information about city operations and public safety matters.

Law enforcement and community relations experts suggest that transparent communication from local officials, like Morán’s statement, is essential for maintaining trust in diverse communities, particularly during times of heightened anxiety around immigration issues.
