Delta State Police Refute Claims of Suspect Death in Custody
Delta State Police Command has issued a strong rebuttal against allegations that a suspect died while in police custody at Ekpan Police Station. The claim, made by an individual identified as Israel Joe, was categorically dismissed as “false, misleading, and completely unfounded” by the Command’s spokesperson.
In a statement released in Asaba on Saturday, Police Public Relations Officer Bright Edafe emphasized that at no time did any suspect die in police custody in Ekpan or anywhere else in Delta State. The police characterized the allegations as an attempt to undermine ongoing crime reduction efforts across the state.
The police statement clarified that the operation in question was a coordinated raid targeting known criminal hideouts conducted on March 25-26, 2026. The operation was led by Deputy Commissioner of Police Olumuyiwa Adejobi, who heads the Operations department. The extensive anti-crime sweep resulted in the apprehension of over 270 suspects in the Ughelli and Warri areas, with law enforcement focusing particularly on suspected drug traffickers and individuals wanted in connection with cult activities.
“Significant quantities of illicit drugs were recovered during this operation,” the statement noted, highlighting the raid’s effectiveness in disrupting local criminal networks.
According to the Command, all arrested individuals underwent proper screening procedures. Those found not to be involved in criminal activities were subsequently released, while others remain in custody. The police emphasized that all detainees are being held in appropriate conditions, insisting that “no casualty was recorded” during the operation or subsequent detentions.
The Command expressed concern about what it described as the deliberate spread of misinformation, calling such actions “reckless and capable of misleading the public.” Officials warned that false information undermines public confidence in law enforcement and distracts from legitimate efforts to combat criminal elements throughout Delta State.
While acknowledging the importance of civil engagement and legitimate criticism, the police statement drew a clear line against those who “operate under the guise of activism or blogging to peddle false and misleading narratives.” The Command issued a stern warning that individuals publishing or circulating false information targeting the police will face investigation, arrest, and prosecution under applicable laws.
Delta State has struggled with various security challenges in recent years, including cultism, kidnapping, and drug trafficking. Law enforcement operations like the recent raid represent part of a broader strategy to address these issues in the oil-rich Niger Delta region.
The Commissioner of Police reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to fulfilling its constitutional responsibilities of safeguarding lives and property while ensuring peace and security for Delta State residents. The statement urged the public to disregard the allegations and to rely only on official channels for accurate information regarding police activities.
This incident highlights ongoing tensions between law enforcement and some civil society actors in Nigeria, where allegations of police misconduct and human rights abuses have periodically surfaced. Police forces across Nigeria have faced increased scrutiny in recent years, particularly following the 2020 #EndSARS protests that focused national attention on allegations of police brutality.
The Delta State Police Command concluded its statement by emphasizing its continued commitment to “professionalism, accountability, and the protection of all citizens,” suggesting it remains open to legitimate oversight while rejecting what it considers false accusations.
