In a stern address to the monthly assembly at the Transport Ministry in Putrajaya, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has condemned the circulation of misleading information about oil price increases allegedly connected to the West Asian conflict.

The Prime Minister specifically targeted politicians and other figures who he claims are making irresponsible statements that confuse the Malaysian public rather than providing accurate information about the complex economic situation.

“There are comments from some politicians who speak hastily, offering half-truths and presenting them as absolute facts,” Anwar stated during the gathering, which was attended by Transport Minister Anthony Loke and Chief Secretary to the Government Tan Sri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar.

Anwar emphasized that while freedom of expression remains a right for all citizens, opinions must be based on accurate information rather than conjecture or partial understanding. “We have the right to criticise and offer counter-views. However, we do not have the right to make judgments based on incorrect or misleading information,” he said.

The Premier’s comments appear to be a direct response to recent statements by Pas president Tan Sri Abdul Hadi Awang. The opposition leader had claimed that Malaysians were being “deceived” by the government regarding fuel price increases in Peninsular Malaysia, questioning why similar policies were not implemented in Sabah and Sarawak.

Abdul Hadi had argued there was no substantial justification for the price increase, pointing out that Malaysia is not directly involved in Iran’s actions at the Strait of Hormuz—a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately 20 percent of global oil shipments pass.

Particularly concerning to the Prime Minister was the tendency of some critics to frame misleading information within religious contexts, which he suggested gives false legitimacy to inaccurate claims. “This reflects a superficial understanding cloaked in religious references, which may appear convincing but ultimately misleads the public,” Anwar noted.

The dispute comes amid global oil market volatility stemming from ongoing tensions in the Middle East. While Malaysia is an oil-producing nation through its state oil company Petronas, it remains vulnerable to international price fluctuations, particularly for refined petroleum products.

Energy analysts have pointed out that even countries not directly involved in regional conflicts can experience price effects due to the globally interconnected nature of oil markets. Risk premiums are often built into international oil prices when geopolitical tensions threaten major shipping routes or production facilities.

The Malaysian government has maintained a system of targeted fuel subsidies in recent years, attempting to balance fiscal responsibility with consumer protection. The differential pricing strategy between Peninsular Malaysia and East Malaysian states reflects varying transportation costs, tax structures, and historical agreements dating back to the formation of Malaysia.

The public disagreement highlights the challenges facing the Anwar administration as it navigates both economic realities and political opposition. With Malaysia’s economy still recovering from pandemic-related setbacks, the government faces pressure to control living costs while maintaining fiscal discipline.

As global oil markets continue to respond to geopolitical tensions, Malaysian consumers and businesses remain concerned about potential ripple effects on transportation, manufacturing, and overall inflation—making accurate information about price mechanisms and government policy increasingly important in public discourse.
