Nigerian Army Secures Ngoshe, Debunks Terrorist Claims During Eid Celebrations

Nigerian Army troops have maintained firm control over the Ngoshe and Gwoza areas of Borno State during the recent Eid-el-Fitr celebrations, effectively countering insurgent propaganda and ensuring peaceful holiday observances for local residents.

In the weeks leading up to the Islamic holiday, both Boko Haram and Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP) militants attempted to create panic among the population by spreading false claims that they would overrun Ngoshe and conduct Sallah prayers at the town’s Central Mosque. These claims were quickly revealed to be baseless attempts to project strength in an area where the terrorist groups have experienced significant setbacks.

Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Apollonia Anele, addressed these developments in a statement, noting that such misinformation tactics reflect the insurgents’ diminishing operational capabilities rather than any genuine threat.

“These false narratives demonstrate their weakening position and increasing reliance on propaganda instead of actual combat effectiveness,” Col. Anele explained in the statement.

Military intelligence detected potential threats to the area, prompting the Army to reinforce their presence in Ngoshe following an attempted insurgent incursion on March 4. Since then, troops have intensified clearance operations throughout the region, effectively disrupting terrorist movements and neutralizing several insurgents.

The successful security operations benefited from comprehensive aerial surveillance and crucial intelligence provided by local residents, highlighting the importance of military-civilian cooperation in counter-insurgency efforts. This collaborative approach has become increasingly important in the decade-long battle against extremist groups in Nigeria’s northeast.

As a result of these heightened security measures, the Ngoshe community and broader Gwoza axis remained peaceful throughout the Sallah celebration period, with residents able to attend religious services and celebrate the holiday without disruption or fear.

In a significant show of confidence and territorial control, Brigadier General NI Abdullahi, Commander of the 26 Task Force Brigade, personally joined worshippers at the Ngoshe Central Mosque for Eid prayers. This symbolic gesture served to reassure the community while demonstrating the Army’s complete control over the area that terrorists had falsely claimed they would capture.

The Chief of Army Staff expressed appreciation for the resilience and cooperation of local residents, emphasizing that community support remains essential to maintaining security gains against insurgent groups. This collaborative relationship has proven vital as the military continues its efforts to fully restore stability to Nigeria’s conflict-affected northeastern regions.

The situation in Ngoshe represents a microcosm of the broader counter-terrorism efforts across Borno State, where Nigerian security forces have made significant progress in recent years against insurgent groups that once controlled vast territories. While challenges persist in more remote areas, the Army’s ability to secure population centers during high-profile religious holidays demonstrates improving security conditions.

Security analysts note that terrorist groups increasingly resort to propaganda and misinformation when their operational capabilities are degraded, attempting to maintain relevance and create an illusion of strength. The Army’s quick and effective response to these tactics in Ngoshe exemplifies their evolving counter-insurgency approach, combining military operations with public information campaigns to combat both physical threats and psychological warfare.

As communities across Borno State continue their slow recovery from years of conflict, such peaceful celebrations represent significant milestones in the journey toward normalcy and sustained peace in a region that has experienced devastating violence over the past decade.
