In a significant development for Nigeria’s digital political landscape, a new artificial intelligence application called “BAT-BOT AI” has been unveiled to combat the spread of misinformation ahead of the 2027 general elections. The application specifically aims to counter fake news surrounding President Bola Tinubu’s re-election campaign.

Developed by Nigerian tech expert Gunu Usman, founder of LYT24 Technologies, the AI tool is already operational across major social media platforms including WhatsApp, X (formerly Twitter), and Telegram. During Wednesday’s launch event in Abuja, Usman emphasized that the application was created with a clear mission: ensuring facts travel faster than falsehood in Nigeria’s increasingly digital information ecosystem.

“In an era where elections are increasingly won or lost in the digital arena, Nigeria is witnessing the emergence of a new kind of political infrastructure — one powered not by billboards or campaign caravans, but by artificial intelligence,” Usman explained at the launch.

The timing of this technological intervention reflects growing concerns about information integrity in Nigerian politics. According to Usman, the rapid proliferation of misinformation, deepfakes, hate speech, and manipulated narratives targeting the current administration, the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC), and national institutions poses substantial risks to democratic stability and public trust.

The name “BAT-BOT AI” derives from President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s initials, highlighting its focus on supporting the president’s administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda. The platform has been designed as a sovereign AI-powered civic information and fact-verification system that provides Nigerians with access to verified information about government policies and initiatives.

Nigeria’s digital landscape represents a crucial battleground for political narratives, with over 100 million Nigerians accessing information via smartphones. In this environment, public perception can shift rapidly, potentially influencing political outcomes based on information that may not be accurate.

The BAT-BOT AI system allows users to verify various types of content including text, images, videos, and voice notes. Additionally, it provides information on government policies and projects while answering civic and governance-related questions in real-time through an accessible format.

To enhance inclusivity across Nigeria’s diverse population, the application supports multiple languages including English, Hausa, Yoruba, Igbo, and Nigerian Pidgin, effectively bridging literacy and language barriers that might otherwise limit access to accurate information about public policies and democratic processes.

This development marks a significant step in the application of artificial intelligence to strengthen democratic institutions in Nigeria. As digital misinformation becomes increasingly sophisticated worldwide, countries are exploring technological solutions to protect electoral integrity and public discourse.

The launch of BAT-BOT AI also reflects the growing recognition that election campaigns are increasingly fought in digital spaces, requiring new approaches to information verification and distribution. For Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation with a history of electoral challenges, such technological interventions could play a crucial role in the upcoming 2027 electoral cycle.

As the application begins its operations, political analysts will be watching closely to evaluate its effectiveness in combating misinformation and its impact on public discourse surrounding President Tinubu’s administration and re-election campaign.
