Philippine photojournalists have issued a strong rebuke against recent online claims questioning the authenticity of official government event photography, calling such allegations dangerous misinformation that threatens professional credibility and historical documentation.

The Presidential Photojournalists Association (PPA) released a statement addressing what it describes as “false and misleading claims” about photographs taken during the recent Araw ng Kagitingan (Day of Valor) commemorations held Thursday, April 9, 2026. The annual event honors Filipino and American soldiers who defended Bataan during World War II.

“Allegations that these images are recycled or fabricated are inaccurate and risk undermining the credibility of professional photojournalists and the integrity of the profession as a whole,” the statement reads, responding to social media posts suggesting certain images from the ceremonies were manipulated or reused from previous years.

The association emphasized that its members operate under strict professional standards and represent established news organizations with rigorous editorial processes. All published photographs undergo multiple verification steps to ensure accurate representation of events as they occurred.

PPA members routinely work in challenging environments to document official functions of significant public interest. For events like Araw ng Kagitingan, photojournalists typically endure long hours in difficult weather conditions to capture the solemn ceremonies that take place at memorials across the Philippines, particularly at the Dambana ng Kagitingan (Shrine of Valor) on Mount Samat in Bataan.

The association also noted a disturbing trend where legitimate photographs are being repurposed with misleading captions or presented out of context on various social media platforms. This practice has accelerated in recent years amid the Philippines’ increasingly polarized political climate, where visual misinformation often spreads rapidly during significant national events.

“Such practices contribute to the spread of misinformation and may affect the reputation of the photojournalists and their employers,” the statement continued.

The PPA reminded the public that these actions could have legal consequences under Philippine law, citing specific provisions of the Revised Penal Code, the Cybercrime Prevention Act of 2012, and the Intellectual Property Code that protect against defamation and unauthorized use of copyrighted material.

Media law experts note that penalties for such violations can include imprisonment and substantial fines, particularly when the misinformation is spread electronically and reaches a wide audience.

The statement carries additional weight given the sacred nature of Araw ng Kagitingan, one of the Philippines’ most important historical commemorations. The association warned that spreading falsehoods about documentation of these ceremonies “risks diminishing the memory of the nation’s heroes” and “detracts from the legacy of those who fought and sacrificed for the country.”

The controversy highlights growing concerns within journalism circles about the challenge of maintaining public trust in an era of deepfakes, manipulated media, and widespread disinformation campaigns. Professional photojournalists worldwide have faced similar challenges as digital tools make image manipulation increasingly sophisticated and difficult to detect.

Media literacy advocates have praised the PPA’s statement as an important step in educating the public about the verification processes that legitimate news organizations employ.

The PPA emphasized its political neutrality, stating that its response “is not issued to support any individual or institution” but rather to “address misinformation and uphold the standards of professional photojournalism.”

The association concluded by urging Filipinos to exercise critical thinking when consuming media and to verify information through established, credible news sources rather than relying on unverified social media posts.
