India’s Information Ministry Launches AI Chatbot to Combat Fake News

The Ministry of Information and Broadcasting in India is preparing to deploy an artificial intelligence-powered chatbot as part of its growing efforts to combat misinformation and fake news circulating online, officials announced this week.

The new AI tool will enhance the existing fact-checking infrastructure operated by the Press Information Bureau (PIB), which has already established a dedicated Fact Check Unit (FCU) to address false claims and misinformation across social media platforms.

“We have got a fact-check chatbot made and tested. We will launch it after the final testing,” said Information and Broadcasting Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw. “As soon as you put a query, it will produce information, even if it has happened a year ago. The chatbot will also have a ‘search’ option.”

The chatbot represents a significant technological advancement in the government’s approach to tackling misinformation. It will allow users to instantly verify claims and access previous fact-checks conducted by the ministry, creating a searchable database of verified information.

This development comes at a critical time when India, with its more than 800 million internet users, faces growing challenges from rapidly spreading misinformation that can trigger public unrest and communal tensions. Government officials have expressed concern about the speed at which false information can circulate before traditional fact-checking methods can respond.

Beyond the chatbot, the ministry is also developing specialized software to detect and counter deepfake videos, which have emerged as a particularly troubling form of misinformation. Deepfakes use artificial intelligence to create convincing but fabricated videos of individuals saying or doing things that never occurred.

“As soon as you put the video in that software, the related authentic video will appear,” explained a ministry official familiar with the project. “Many deepfake videos about the Indian Army are being run by foreign people’s handles, false claims are made while the original is about something else.”

The official noted that the deepfake detection tool, though still in preliminary stages of development, aims to address the critical time lag between when a manipulated video begins circulating and when fact-checkers can verify and debunk it. This gap often allows misinformation to gain significant traction before corrections can be widely disseminated.

The government’s initiatives align with similar efforts globally as countries grapple with the proliferation of synthetic media and AI-generated content. The European Union, United States, and several Asian nations have also been developing regulatory frameworks and technical solutions to address the growing sophistication of digital misinformation.

India’s approach combines technological tools with institutional processes. The PIB’s Fact Check Unit has been working to coordinate rapid responses across government departments when false information surfaces online, particularly related to government policies or public figures.

Building on this foundation, the Information Ministry also plans to launch “video backgrounders” to complement its existing text-based backgrounders, which provide contextual information about government policies and programs to journalists and the public.

“Mainstream national media has been using our backgrounders and now we are trying to even further improve them,” Minister Vaishnaw said. “At present, we reach out to about 24,000 individuals through various channels. We will soon start video backgrounders.”

To enhance the quality of these informational resources, the ministry has organized workshops led by senior journalists to train government officials in effective communication and accurate information dissemination.

Media experts suggest these combined efforts reflect the Indian government’s recognition that combating misinformation requires both reactive fact-checking and proactive information distribution through accessible, digital-first formats.

As India prepares for upcoming state elections and continues to navigate complex social issues, officials hope these new tools will help maintain information integrity in an increasingly complex digital media landscape.
