In a direct challenge to his political opponents, Rajeev Chandrasekhar, the BJP State President and candidate from Nemom constituency, has dismissed recent allegations from the Congress party regarding his asset disclosure in an affidavit submitted to the Election Commission as “imaginary lies.”

Speaking to ANI on Monday, Chandrasekhar strongly defended his financial transparency while accusing the Congress of recycling previously debunked claims about his income tax filings and property holdings. His forceful rebuttal comes as Kerala heads into a crucial electoral battle.

“I am astonished at the tactics being employed by the Congress party,” Chandrasekhar said during the interview. He contrasted what he described as the party’s historical stature with its current approach, which he characterized as manufacturing false narratives against BJP candidates.

Chandrasekhar particularly took issue with claims that the BJP is aligned with the Communist Party of India (Marxist), calling this portrayal a deliberate mischaracterization of his party’s position in Kerala’s complex political landscape. “They attempt to paint BJP as an ally of CPI(M),” he noted, urging Congress leaders to instead focus on presenting substantive policy visions for Kerala’s development rather than engaging in what he termed insubstantial allegations.

The controversy unfolds against the backdrop of Kerala’s intensifying political climate ahead of the state’s legislative assembly elections scheduled for April 9, 2026. The electoral contest represents a critical juncture for all three major political formations in the state.

The CPI(M)-led Left Democratic Front (LDF), currently in power under Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, is working to maintain its governing position amid various challenges including economic pressures and infrastructure development concerns. The LDF has been implementing several welfare schemes aimed at solidifying its base among Kerala’s working class and agricultural communities.

Meanwhile, the Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) is positioning itself as the primary alternative to the left-wing government. The alliance has been vocal in highlighting issues like unemployment, alleged corruption, and what it describes as administrative failures under the current regime.

The BJP, traditionally a minor political force in Kerala’s bipolar political system, has shown signs of expanding its influence in recent years. The party received a significant morale boost after securing a landmark victory in the Thiruvananthapuram Corporation elections, demonstrating potential for growth in urban centers. This win has energized the party’s cadre as it attempts to establish a meaningful foothold in the state legislature.

Chandrasekhar’s candidacy in Nemom is particularly significant, as this constituency briefly became the BJP’s lone outpost in the Kerala Assembly when O. Rajagopal won the seat in 2016. Though the seat returned to the LDF in subsequent elections, the BJP views it as a potential gateway to greater representation in the state.

Kerala’s political landscape has historically been dominated by alternating governments led by either the LDF or UDF, with the BJP struggling to convert its national prominence into state-level representation. However, changing demographic patterns and shifting voter preferences have created opportunities for the party to expand beyond its traditional support base.

Political analysts note that allegations regarding candidate finances and transparency have become increasingly common features of Kerala’s electoral campaigns, reflecting the intensely competitive nature of the state’s politics and the high stakes involved for all participants.

As the campaign progresses, voters in Kerala will be evaluating not just the credibility of such allegations but also the competing visions for the state’s future development presented by these three political formations.
