Experts Call for Responsible Media Reporting Amid Growing Digital Misinformation Concerns
Media professionals, researchers, and academics gathered in Abuja on Tuesday to address the critical role of accurate reporting and fact-checking in an era where digital narratives increasingly shape public opinion and sentiment.
The event, organized by NOIPolls, a prominent West African polling organization, brought together stakeholders to discuss the intersection of media coverage and public perception. NOIPolls specializes in gathering data on political trends, economic issues, and consumer behavior throughout Nigeria’s economy.
Chime Nwangwu, Chief Executive Officer of NOIPolls, emphasized that the rapid pace of information dissemination in today’s digital landscape has significantly increased the risk of unverified narratives influencing national discourse.
“The speed at which information travels now means we must be more vigilant than ever about accuracy,” Nwangwu told attendees. He highlighted that NOIPolls, founded in 2006 by former Finance Minister and current World Trade Organization Director-General Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, was established specifically to provide credible data reflecting citizens’ opinions and supporting evidence-based policymaking.
Nwangwu underscored the media’s pivotal role as intermediaries between data collectors and the public. “You’re the bridge between data and the public. You’re the one who can transform the numbers that we have into stories, insights, narratives, and finally into conversations that can reach millions of citizens,” he said.
Professor Abiodun Adeniyi from Baze University added historical context to the discussion, warning about the dangers of unchecked public sentiment and misinformation. The communication and media epistemology expert drew parallels to historical examples, including the execution of Socrates.
“He was murdered not because he was guilty. He was murdered only because public sentiment was whipped effectively against him,” Adeniyi explained. He further referenced propaganda tactics employed during World War II under Adolf Hitler as evidence of how information can be weaponized to manipulate public opinion on a massive scale.
Adeniyi urged journalists to maintain rigorous ethical standards and prioritize evidence-based reporting. “The weapon that you and I know—truth, evidence, factual, evidence-based reporting,” he emphasized as the primary defense against misinformation.
The gathering comes at a critical time for Nigeria, which has experienced a dramatic increase in digital media consumption in recent years. The surge is largely attributed to growing internet penetration rates and widespread smartphone adoption across the country. Platforms like Facebook, X (formerly Twitter), and WhatsApp have evolved into primary news sources for millions of Nigerians.
However, this shift toward digital media consumption has created fertile ground for misinformation to flourish. Without traditional editorial oversight, unverified claims can spread rapidly through social networks, raising significant concerns about information integrity in the public sphere.
Media practitioners at the event were encouraged to leverage their social media platforms proactively to combat fake news and counter misinformation. Participants stressed the importance of thorough fact-checking before publishing content and maintaining accuracy in all reporting.
The challenges facing Nigeria mirror global trends, where misinformation has prompted renewed focus on media literacy and ethical journalism standards. For emerging democracies like Nigeria, where institutional trust remains fragile, the media’s responsibility to provide accurate, balanced, and verifiable information becomes even more crucial.
As digital platforms continue to evolve and information consumption patterns change, the event highlighted the ongoing need for media professionals to serve as responsible gatekeepers, helping to ensure that public discourse is grounded in facts rather than shaped by unchecked narratives and misinformation.
