Luke Bryan Reveals Sister’s Death Was Due to Sudden Death Syndrome, Clears Up “Misinformation”

Country music star Luke Bryan has finally opened up about the cause of his sister Kelly Bryan’s unexpected death in 2007, addressing what he calls “misinformation” surrounding her passing. During a recent appearance on Anderson Cooper’s “All There Is” podcast, Bryan shared details about his sister’s death at age 39, a topic he has largely avoided discussing publicly for nearly two decades.

“There’s some misinformation out there on the internet, and I think some people kind of wonder what happened and think that we’ve tried to cover it up,” Bryan explained on the podcast. He revealed that his sister died from sudden death syndrome, a rare condition.

“There is a very, very small percentage of people that die for no reason in the world. And it’s called sudden death syndrome and that’s essentially what they described my sister’s death as,” he said. “She was in her home doing her laundry… it was like somebody just turned the switch off on her and it was just tragic beyond words.”

The “American Idol” judge explained that his family sought answers following Kelly’s sudden passing, but many of their investigations yielded inconclusive results. Bryan noted that his sister had suffered “a pretty severe orbital bone injury,” suggesting she may have fainted and struck her head on the floor. Her youngest child, only three years old at the time, was present when the tragedy occurred.

The loss created a profound void in the Bryan family. “She really was everything in our lives,” Bryan shared during the emotional interview. “She was a mother of three children and she was, I mean, the best mother you could ever dream of. And we all leaned on her for so many things and it’s hard to really wrap your brain around her being gone.”

Tragedy struck the family again seven years later when Kelly’s husband, Ben Lee Cheshire, died of a heart attack in 2014. The couple’s three children, who had been in their father’s care since their mother’s death, suddenly found themselves orphaned.

In a remarkable demonstration of family commitment, Luke and his wife Caroline stepped in to raise the three children alongside their own sons, Bo and Tate. The blended family created what Bryan describes as a “special bond” between the cousins who have grown up together.

“I can’t imagine a household where Til would have never grown up in it,” Bryan reflected, referring to his nephew. “It’s just been a blessing and a silver lining to have him and to watch the girls go through life and become mothers… and get through life daily has been pretty inspiring too. I’m really proud of them.”

Bryan’s willingness to discuss this deeply personal family tragedy marks a significant moment for the country singer, who has built a reputation as one of country music’s most successful and beloved artists over the past two decades. Despite his public persona, he has generally kept the most painful chapters of his family history private.
