Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has called for an urgent team meeting following the team’s disappointing 1-1 draw with Burnley at Anfield, where home fans expressed their frustration with audible boos at the final whistle.

The Dutch defender, who previously organized a players’ meeting last October after a defeat to Manchester United, voiced clear disappointment with his team’s performance against the relegation-threatened Clarets, particularly highlighting concerns about consistency throughout matches.

“I’m frustrated that after 60 minutes we started to become sloppy and it’s not the first time,” van Dijk told reporters in his post-match comments. “It’s been spoken about already but we have to address it again apparently.”

The center-back announced plans for a team discussion on Monday ahead of Liverpool’s crucial midweek Champions League fixture against Brighton & Hove Albion. “Monday will be a big one for it because Wednesday will be a very difficult game over there not only because of the atmosphere but it’s against a [Roberto] De Zerbi team who make it very difficult for you.”

The frustrating result against Burnley continues a concerning pattern for Liverpool, who have struggled with maintaining intensity throughout full matches this season. The Reds dominated the opening hour against Burnley but failed to capitalize on numerous chances before allowing their opponents back into the contest.

This inconsistency has become a recurring theme for Arne Slot’s side, who are in a transitional period following Jürgen Klopp’s departure after a successful nine-year tenure at the club. While Liverpool have shown flashes of brilliance under their new Dutch manager, maintaining performance levels across entire matches has proven challenging.

Van Dijk emphasized collective responsibility in addressing these issues. “It’s not about me addressing it, it is about how can we solve it because we all want to win games and we had plenty of chances to do so [against Burnley].”

The captain’s frustration is particularly noteworthy given Liverpool’s recent 3-1 victory over Marseille in the Champions League, where they delivered a more complete performance. Following that match, van Dijk had stressed the importance of maintaining focus and intensity across all competitions.

“We keep saying after a win or a good result, it’s just to fully focus on recovery right now,” he said after the Marseille win. “Then we are going to Bournemouth, they are a very difficult team to beat. A team that plays very good football and a very good manager. We have to be more than ready.”

Liverpool’s inconsistency comes at a critical juncture in their season. The Premier League title race is already showing signs of being fiercely competitive, with Manchester City, Arsenal, and others setting a blistering pace. Meanwhile, the revamped Champions League format leaves little room for dropped points if the Reds hope to secure favorable knockout stage positioning.

For van Dijk personally, this represents another challenge in his leadership journey. Since being named club captain following Jordan Henderson’s departure, the 33-year-old defender has embraced a more vocal role both on and off the pitch. His willingness to organize team meetings and publicly address shortcomings demonstrates his commitment to maintaining Liverpool’s high standards.

As Liverpool prepare to face Brighton on Wednesday, all eyes will be on how the team responds to van Dijk’s latest intervention. Roberto De Zerbi’s tactically sophisticated Brighton side will provide a stern test of whether the Reds can implement solutions to their consistency issues.
