In a strongly worded statement, Kerala Opposition Leader V D Satheesan has lashed out at what he describes as a coordinated misinformation campaign targeting the Congress Party’s candidate selection process for the upcoming April 9 assembly elections.

Satheesan specifically accused certain media outlets of publishing deliberately misleading reports about candidate uncertainty, claiming these false narratives were strategically orchestrated by the ruling Communist Party of India (Marxist) or CPI(M) to sow confusion among voters and party workers alike.

“These reports suggesting indecision over the candidacies of our respected MPs K Sudhakaran and Adoor Prakash are entirely fabricated,” Satheesan said during a press briefing in Thiruvananthapuram. “This is a calculated attempt to create an impression of disarray within our ranks just weeks before the crucial polls.”

The political landscape in Kerala has grown increasingly tense as the assembly elections approach, with both the ruling Left Democratic Front (LDF) led by the CPI(M) and the opposition United Democratic Front (UDF) spearheaded by Congress intensifying their campaigns across the state’s 140 constituencies.

Despite acknowledging some delays in the candidate announcement process, Satheesan appeared confident that these tactical maneuvers from political opponents would have little impact on the Congress party’s electoral prospects. He projected an overwhelmingly positive outcome for the UDF alliance, boldly predicting they would secure over 100 seats in the 140-member Kerala Legislative Assembly.

“No amount of propaganda can undermine the strong anti-incumbency sentiment prevailing across Kerala,” Satheesan asserted. “People are dissatisfied with the current government’s performance on multiple fronts, from economic management to public safety.”

Addressing questions about the delayed candidate announcements that had fueled some of the speculation, Satheesan offered a straightforward explanation. According to him, the process had been temporarily slowed due to health issues affecting the chairman of the Congress screening committee responsible for candidate finalization.

The Opposition Leader then provided a detailed timeline of the Congress party’s candidate selection process, noting that the party had already released its first list of 55 candidates on March 17. This was followed by a second list containing 37 additional names, bringing their total announced candidates to 92.

In a significant political development that highlights growing disillusionment within the ruling front, Satheesan also revealed that three former CPI(M) members would be contesting the elections as independent candidates with full Congress support. This defection represents a potential advantage for the UDF in constituencies where these candidates maintain strong local influence.

Kerala’s political observers note that candidate selection is particularly crucial in this election cycle, with both major fronts carefully balancing various factors including regional representation, community equations, and candidate winnability. The Congress party’s candidate choices reflect its strategy to capitalize on anti-incumbent sentiment while presenting experienced faces in key battleground constituencies.

The verbal sparring between the CPI(M) and Congress has intensified in recent weeks, with accusations and counter-accusations dominating the political discourse. Political analysts suggest this heightened rhetoric indicates both fronts recognize the high stakes in an election that could potentially reshape Kerala’s political landscape.

As campaigning enters its crucial final phase, voters across Kerala’s 14 districts will be closely watching how these political narratives unfold, with election day now just weeks away.
