Security forces and civil society in Kano State have launched early initiatives to combat misinformation and hate speech ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections, marking a proactive approach to maintaining peace in one of the country’s most politically significant states.
The Kano State Police Command recently hosted a youth summit focused on preventing the spread of fake news and divisive narratives that typically intensify during pre-election periods. The gathering brought together security officials, civil society organizations, government representatives, and youth leaders to develop strategies for responsible communication.
Ibrahim Adamu Bakori, Kano State Commissioner of Police, revealed that the initiative stems from a directive by Inspector-General of Police Kayode Egbetokun to address social bias, misinformation, and inflammatory content as political activities gradually increase nationwide.
“The media space is currently awash with hate speech and fake news capable of igniting conflict and disrupting social harmony,” Bakori warned during the event. “We will not allow a few individuals to destabilize the peace of Kano State. Anyone found promoting hate speech or publishing fake news will face the full weight of the law.”
The Commissioner emphasized the importance of collaboration between journalists, social media influencers, community leaders, and young people to promote responsible communication practices. He assured that police forces remain committed to maintaining law and order throughout the electoral cycle.
Kano’s strategic importance in Nigeria’s political landscape cannot be overstated. With one of the country’s largest voting populations and a history of politically charged environments during elections, the state often experiences heightened tensions during campaign periods. Previous election cycles have seen misinformation spread rapidly through both traditional media and digital platforms, sometimes leading to community unrest.
Aminu Magashi Garba, chairman of the Magashi Garba (AMG) Foundation, described the summit as timely, noting that election seasons typically see deliberate misinformation campaigns that often target youth as vehicles for spreading false narratives.
The AMG Foundation has announced plans to collaborate with police and youth organizations over the next year to conduct training sessions for political party spokespersons, youth leaders, and civil society groups on fact-based messaging. The initiative will include identifying and training youth peer educators to serve as champions against fake news while strengthening intelligence-sharing channels with security agencies.
“We are committed to supporting dialogue, training, and coordination that will help safeguard Kano State as we approach 2027,” Garba said, indicating that the partnership would expand to include additional stakeholders as the program develops.
The state government has also thrown its weight behind the initiative. Maimuna Umar, special adviser to Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf on Community Policing, highlighted the importance of community-driven security efforts and praised the governor for supporting security agencies and community policing initiatives.
Umar emphasized that sustainable security requires collaboration among law enforcement, communities, and various civic groups. She described the summit as a critical platform for countering harmful online narratives and promoting responsible use of social media.
The timing of these preventive measures reflects growing concern about the role of misinformation in Nigerian politics. With over three years until the next general election, authorities appear to be taking lessons from previous electoral cycles where last-minute interventions proved insufficient to stem the tide of fake news.
Participants at the summit discussed the significant influence of radio, television, and digital platforms in shaping public opinion ahead of elections. Media professionals were urged to uphold ethical standards, verify information, and avoid sensational reporting that could inflame tensions in the politically volatile state.
The initiative comes as Kano undergoes significant infrastructural development, including a proposed N1 trillion metro rail project that aims to restore the state’s competitive economic edge—developments that stakeholders fear could be undermined by political instability fueled by misinformation.
As the 2027 elections draw closer, this early intervention may serve as a model for other states seeking to minimize election-related tensions through proactive engagement with communities and stakeholders.
