ISKCON Faces Criticism from Puri’s Titular King Over Jagannath Cultural Practices

Puri’s titular king, Gajapati Maharaja Dibyasingha Deb, has publicly condemned the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) for allegedly spreading “misinformation” about Jagannath culture and violating sacred traditions by holding Rath Yatra celebrations on dates not sanctioned by religious scriptures.

Speaking at a congregation of the Shree Jagannath Chetana Research Institute in Bhubaneswar on Sunday, Deb expressed serious concern over what he described as a “dangerous trend” that threatens the sanctity of centuries-old Jagannath traditions.

“Holding untimely Rath Yatra is a serious deviation. ISKCON has been violating scriptures and Shree Jagannath tradition,” said Deb, who serves as chairman of the Shree Jagannath Temple Managing Committee (SJTMC), the highest decision-making authority for the revered Puri shrine.

The controversy centers on the timing of Rath Yatra, one of India’s most significant religious festivals, where deities are paraded in elaborate chariots. According to scriptures, the celebration must be held on Asadha Shukla Paksha Dwitiya Tithi, a specific date in the Hindu lunar calendar.

ISKCON, which has popularized Jagannath worship globally through its network of temples, recently informed the SJTMC that while it would observe the Snan Purnima ritual on the traditional date worldwide, it cannot commit to conducting Rath Yatra celebrations on a single specific date internationally.

In a letter dated October 19, ISKCON Governing Body Commission Chairman Govardhan Das explained that the organization faces “insurmountable challenges” in coordinating international Rath Yatra celebrations to match the traditional Puri date.

“In most countries outside India, worship of Lord Jagannath is followed by a small minority, and permissions for processions are difficult to obtain. Most government authorities in the West allow such processions only on weekends to avoid disruption to commercial activities,” the letter stated.

However, Deb remains unconvinced by these explanations, emphasizing that scheduling flexibility should not override scriptural mandates. He called upon religious scholars and devotees to vocally oppose these deviations before they become normalized.

“Silence could encourage further deviations. If objections are not raised strongly, untimely observances could gradually become normalized,” Deb warned, adding that several attempts to negotiate with ISKCON on this matter have proven unsuccessful.

Jagannath culture, deeply rooted in the eastern state of Odisha, encompasses a rich tapestry of traditions, rituals, and philosophical beliefs centered around Lord Jagannath, considered a form of Lord Krishna. Puri’s Jagannath Temple stands as the epicenter of these traditions, with the annual Rath Yatra drawing millions of devotees.

The dispute highlights the inherent tensions that can arise when ancient religious practices expand globally. While ISKCON has been instrumental in spreading Jagannath worship worldwide, the adaptations necessary for international observance have created friction with traditional authorities like Deb, who is regarded as the “first servitor” of Lord Jagannath.

This controversy emerges at a time when religious authorities in India are increasingly asserting the importance of adhering to traditional practices amidst growing globalization and adaptation of Hindu rituals abroad.

Religious scholars note that similar tensions exist in other faith traditions when local practices are internationalized, requiring difficult decisions about which elements can be adapted to new environments and which must remain strictly preserved according to tradition.

As this dispute continues, it remains to be seen whether a compromise can be reached that satisfies both the global outreach mission of ISKCON and the preservation of traditional scriptural practices championed by Puri’s religious authorities.
