India’s Petroleum and LPG Supply Remains Secure Despite Global Concerns
The Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas has issued a comprehensive statement assuring citizens that India’s petroleum and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) supply situation is “fully secure and under control,” countering what it describes as a coordinated misinformation campaign aimed at creating public panic.
According to the Ministry’s release, all of India’s more than 100,000 retail fuel outlets across the country are operating normally with adequate supplies of petrol, diesel, and LPG. Officials emphasized that not a single outlet has been instructed to ration fuel, contrasting India’s stable situation with other countries worldwide that have implemented measures such as rationing, odd-even vehicle restrictions, and forced station closures.
“While other nations are rationing, there is no shortage of supplies in India,” the Ministry stated, noting that isolated incidents of panic buying at select pumps were triggered by misleading videos circulating on social media. To address these situations, oil company depots have been operating around the clock to boost supplies, and credit limits for petrol pump owners have been increased from one day to over three days to prevent shortages due to working capital constraints.
The statement specifically addressed concerns regarding disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which significant global oil shipments pass. Despite tensions in the region, the Ministry assured that India is receiving more crude oil from its network of over 41 global suppliers than what previously transited through the strait. The diversification of supply sources, particularly from the western hemisphere, has more than compensated for potential disruptions.
Indian refineries are currently operating at over 100% capacity, with crude oil supplies for the next 60 days already secured by Indian oil companies. “There is no supply gap,” the Ministry emphasized.
Regarding LPG, the government highlighted significant improvements in domestic production. Following the implementation of the LPG Control Order, refinery production has increased by 40%, bringing daily output to 50 TMT (thousand metric tonnes)—representing more than 60% of India’s total daily requirement of approximately 80 TMT. This boost in domestic production has reduced India’s daily import requirements to just 30 TMT.
The Ministry further reassured that beyond domestic production, 800 TMT of LPG shipments are already secured and en route from various countries including the United States, Russia, and Australia. These imports will arrive at India’s 22 LPG terminals, a significant expansion from the 11 terminals that existed in 2014. Approximately one month’s supply has been arranged, with ongoing procurement to ensure continuous availability.
Oil companies are successfully meeting demand by delivering over 50 lakh (5 million) cylinders daily. The statement noted that cylinder demand had temporarily spiked to 89 lakh cylinders due to panic ordering but has since normalized. Commercial cylinder allocations have been increased to 50% in coordination with state governments to prevent hoarding and black market activities.
The Ministry expressed serious concern about the circulation of misleading content on social media platforms, which it claims selectively uses images of queues and foreign news footage to create a false impression of shortages in India. Some posts have reportedly misrepresented standard administrative instruments, such as the Natural Gas Control Order and LPG Control Order, as emergency declarations.
“This misinformation is being spread by miscreants and amplified by motivated elements, causing unnecessary public anxiety,” the Ministry stated, urging citizens to rely solely on official government communications for accurate information about fuel and gas availability.
The statement concluded with a warning that spreading false information regarding essential commodity availability is an offense under applicable laws, and the government would take action against those deliberately creating panic.
