India’s Petroleum Supply Secure Despite Global Tensions, Ministry Affirms

India remains fully supplied with petroleum products and LPG despite regional tensions, according to a definitive statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas. Officials have condemned what they describe as a “deliberately mischievous, coordinated campaign of misinformation” aimed at creating unjustified public panic about fuel availability.

The Ministry emphasized that India’s position as the world’s 4th largest refiner and 5th largest exporter of petroleum products fundamentally guarantees domestic supply security. With exports reaching over 150 countries, India’s role as a net exporter structurally insulates its domestic market from shortages.

“All of our more than 100,000 retail fuel outlets nationwide are operational and dispensing fuel without interruption,” a Ministry spokesperson confirmed. “Not a single outlet has been instructed to ration supplies.”

This situation contrasts sharply with measures implemented in other countries facing energy challenges, where authorities have imposed rationing, odd-even vehicle restrictions, and even declared national emergencies. The spokesperson noted that while isolated instances of panic buying occurred at some pumps following viral social media posts, these were swiftly addressed by increasing supply.

Oil companies have enhanced credit facilities to petrol pump operators, extending their purchasing power from one day to three days to prevent any working capital constraints from affecting retail availability.

Regarding crude oil supply amid tensions in the Strait of Hormuz, the Ministry reported that India’s diverse supply chain—comprising more than 41 global suppliers—has more than compensated for any regional disruption. Refineries are currently operating above 100% capacity, with crude supplies secured for the next 60 days.

The Ministry specifically refuted claims circulating on social media suggesting that India has only six days of strategic reserves. “India maintains approximately 60 days of actual stock coverage within its 74-day reserve capacity, including crude stocks, product stocks, and dedicated strategic storage in caverns,” the statement clarified. “This provides almost two months of steady supply regardless of global developments, with procurement secured for the coming months.”

For LPG, domestic production has increased by 40% following a recent Control Order issued by the Ministry. Daily output now reaches 50,000 metric tons, representing more than 60% of India’s daily requirement of approximately 80,000 metric tons. This significant increase has reduced import dependencies to just 30,000 metric tons daily.

The Ministry confirmed that 800,000 metric tons of LPG shipments are already secured and en route from various countries including the United States, Russia, and Australia. These imports will arrive across India’s 22 LPG terminals—double the number that existed in 2014. Oil companies are successfully delivering over 5 million cylinders daily, meeting consumer demand that had temporarily spiked to 8.9 million cylinders during a brief period of panic ordering.

On the natural gas front, India currently produces 92 MMSCMD (million metric standard cubic meters per day) domestically out of its total requirement of 191 MMSCMD. The country has expanded its city gas distribution network from 57 geographical areas in 2014 to over 300 today, with piped natural gas connections growing from 2.5 million to over 15 million households.

“The promotion of piped natural gas is part of a long-term energy strategy that predates current geopolitical tensions,” the Ministry clarified. “It represents a transition to a cleaner, safer, and more affordable option for Indian households, not a response to any LPG shortage.”

The Ministry has issued a stern warning against entities spreading misinformation, noting that some social media posts have deliberately mischaracterized standard administrative orders as emergency declarations. Officials emphasized that spreading false information about essential commodities constitutes an offense under applicable laws, and the government will take appropriate action against those creating unnecessary panic.
