India’s petroleum and natural gas supplies remain secure and stable despite regional tensions in West Asia and widespread rumors suggesting otherwise, according to a definitive statement from the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas (MoPNG).

The Ministry issued a strong reassurance that the country’s fuel situation is “fully secure and under control,” directly countering what it characterized as a “deliberately mischievous and coordinated campaign of misinformation” circulating across social media platforms and messaging services.

Officials emphasized that all of India’s more than 100,000 retail fuel outlets are functioning normally with adequate stocks. The government flatly denied implementing any fuel rationing measures, contrary to rumors that had prompted isolated incidents of panic buying in some regions.

“India is an oasis of energy security,” the Ministry stated, highlighting the country’s position as the world’s fourth-largest refiner and fifth-largest exporter of petroleum products. This robust domestic refining capacity structurally ensures availability even during global market disruptions.

The statement comes amid escalating tensions in West Asia, which have raised concerns about potential supply chain disruptions in energy markets. Addressing these concerns directly, the Ministry revealed that India currently maintains approximately 60 days’ worth of strategic fuel reserves, including crude oil stocks, refined product inventories, and dedicated storage in underground caverns.

“Even 27 days into the regional conflict, there has been no impact on India’s energy supply chains,” a Ministry official confirmed. The government further disclosed that Indian oil companies have already secured and contracted crude oil supplies for the next 60 days, effectively insulating domestic markets from immediate global price volatility or supply constraints.

The liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) sector, critical for millions of Indian households, has also received significant attention. According to the Ministry, domestic refinery production of LPG has been increased by 40 percent in recent months. Daily production now reaches approximately 50 thousand metric tonnes (TMT), satisfying over 60 percent of national requirements.

To supplement domestic production, approximately 800 TMT of LPG imports are already en route to India from diverse sources including the United States, Russia, and Australia. This diversification strategy has been implemented specifically to reduce dependency on any single region for energy imports.

The Ministry also addressed questions about the government’s push for Piped Natural Gas (PNG) connections, clarifying that this represents a long-planned strategic transition toward cleaner energy alternatives rather than a reaction to any LPG shortage. The PNG expansion aligns with India’s broader commitments to reduce carbon emissions while enhancing energy security.

Government officials expressed “serious concern” regarding the circulation of misleading social media posts, some of which reportedly used footage from other countries showing fuel queues to falsely suggest similar situations in India. The Ministry issued a stern warning that spreading such misinformation constitutes an offense under applicable laws, though specific statutes weren’t cited.

Energy analysts note that India has significantly strengthened its strategic position in recent years through a combination of expanded domestic refining capacity, diversified import sources, and strategic reserve development. These initiatives have collectively enhanced the country’s ability to withstand external supply shocks.

“The only potential cause of temporary congestion at select fuel stations would be panic buying itself,” the Ministry emphasized, urging citizens to rely exclusively on official government communications regarding the energy sector and to maintain normal purchasing patterns.

Petroleum dealers’ associations have similarly confirmed normal operations across most regions, with only isolated reports of increased customer traffic at some urban outlets following the circulation of shortage rumors.
