India’s petroleum and gas supplies remain secure and well-stocked despite a recent wave of misinformation causing isolated incidents of panic buying across the country, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas confirmed yesterday.
In a comprehensive statement, the Ministry assured citizens that the nation’s fuel infrastructure is operating at full capacity, with no shortages of petrol, diesel, or LPG reported anywhere in India. All 100,000-plus retail fuel outlets nationwide continue normal operations without any supply restrictions.
“Not a single outlet has been asked to ration supply,” the Ministry emphasized, drawing a stark contrast with the situation in other countries. “Across the world, countries are dealing with price increases, rationing, odd-even vehicle restrictions, and forced station closures. Few have declared ‘National Energy Emergency’. India does not feel for any such measures.”
The statement comes amid growing concerns about global energy security following disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz, a critical maritime chokepoint through which approximately one-fifth of the world’s oil passes. Despite these international tensions, Indian officials maintain that the country’s supply chains remain robust and diversified.
According to the Ministry, India now sources crude oil from over 41 global suppliers, more than what was previously routed through the Strait. Increased supply volumes from Western Hemisphere producers have effectively compensated for any regional disruptions. Every refinery in India is currently operating above 100 percent capacity, and crude oil supplies for the next 60 days have already been secured.
The domestic LPG situation is equally stable, officials confirmed. Indian refineries have increased production by 40 percent and now produce approximately 50,000 metric tonnes daily, representing over 60 percent of the national requirement of 80,000 metric tonnes per day. This significant boost in domestic production has reduced import dependency to just 30,000 metric tonnes daily.
To further strengthen supply security, the Ministry revealed that 800,000 metric tonnes of LPG shipments are already secured and en route from diverse sources including the United States, Russia, and Australia. These imports will arrive through 22 dedicated terminals, double the number available in 2014, highlighting the infrastructure improvements made over the past decade.
Despite these assurances, social media has been rife with misinformation, prompting brief surges in demand. LPG cylinder orders temporarily spiked to 8.9 million daily before returning to the normal level of 5 million. In response, oil companies worked overnight to increase supplies, while credit limits for petrol pump owners were extended from one day to over three days to prevent any cash flow constraints.
The Ministry expressed serious concern about coordinated misinformation campaigns using manipulated imagery and false claims about impending lockdowns. Standard administrative measures like the Natural Gas Control Order and LPG Control Order have been misleadingly portrayed as emergency declarations, when they actually represent prudent supply prioritization strategies.
“This misinformation is being spread by miscreants and amplified by motivated elements, causing unnecessary public anxiety,” the Ministry stated, warning that spreading false information about essential commodities constitutes an offense under applicable laws.
Energy analysts note that India’s position as a net exporter of petroleum products provides structural security advantages compared to import-dependent nations. The country’s refining capacity has expanded significantly in recent years, allowing it to process crude oil into finished products not just for domestic consumption but also for export markets.
The Ministry urged citizens to rely exclusively on official government communications regarding fuel and gas availability, emphasizing that appropriate legal action will be taken against those deliberately creating panic through the spread of false information.
