Social media posts claiming Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers were conducting detentions along 28th Street in Grand Rapids have been firmly denied by local authorities, who labeled the assertions as “misinformation.”

A video circulating online showed what the creator claimed were federal ICE agents operating in the area with assistance from Grand Rapids Police Department (GRPD) officers. The footage, which gained traction across multiple platforms, sparked concern among community members, particularly within immigrant communities.

In response, GRPD issued a statement clarifying that the operation captured on video was not an immigration enforcement action. According to police officials, the incident actually involved Grand Rapids officers making an arrest connected to a sexual assault investigation, with assistance from a U.S. Marshals task force.

“Spreading misinformation, whether intentionally or not, only spreads fear unnecessarily,” the department wrote in a Facebook post addressing the situation. The statement aimed to calm concerns within vulnerable communities that might fear heightened immigration enforcement activities.

The incident highlights the growing challenge law enforcement agencies face with rapidly spreading information on social media platforms.
