India Dismisses Fuel Shortage Rumors, Confirms Ample 60-Day Supply

The Indian government has firmly rejected reports of nationwide fuel shortages, characterizing such claims as part of a “deliberate, coordinated misinformation campaign” designed to create public panic. Officials confirmed that the country maintains approximately 60 days of fuel reserves, including crude oil, refined petroleum products, and strategic stockpiles.

In a detailed statement, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas emphasized that there is absolutely no shortage of petrol, diesel, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) anywhere in India. The ministry confirmed that all fuel outlets are operating normally without any rationing measures in place.

“More than one lakh fuel retail outlets across India are functioning smoothly and supplying fuel as usual,” the ministry stated. Officials attributed isolated instances of panic buying to misleading social media posts rather than actual supply disruptions.

To address the sudden spike in demand caused by unfounded rumors, fuel depots have implemented round-the-clock operations to ensure uninterrupted supplies. Oil companies have also extended credit periods for petrol pumps from one day to over three days, helping maintain consistent availability at retail outlets.

India’s robust domestic refining infrastructure has played a crucial role in maintaining market stability. As one of the world’s largest refiners and exporters of petroleum products, India supplies fuel to more than 150 countries. According to ministry officials, all Indian refineries are currently operating above 100% capacity to ensure domestic demand is fully satisfied.

The government further revealed that India’s total fuel storage capacity stands at approximately 74 days, with current stocks covering about 60 days of consumption. This includes crude oil reserves, refined products, and fuel stored in underground strategic facilities. With procurement arrangements already in place for the next two months, officials expressed confidence in the country’s preparedness to handle any global supply uncertainties.

Despite ongoing geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and potential threats to critical shipping lanes like the Strait of Hormuz, crude oil inflows to India remain stable. The country’s strategy of diversifying supply sources—currently importing from more than 41 countries, with increased focus on western hemisphere sources—has effectively mitigated potential disruption risks.

Regarding LPG availability specifically, the government confirmed sufficient supplies nationwide. Domestic refinery production has been ramped up to 40,000-50,000 metric tonnes daily, meeting over 60% of total demand. The remaining requirement is being fulfilled through secured imports, with approximately 800,000 metric tonnes of LPG shipments already en route from countries including the United States, Russia, and Australia.

“Oil companies are currently delivering more than 50 lakh LPG cylinders daily,” the ministry noted, adding that demand has begun to stabilize after an initial surge triggered by panic bookings.

The government also clarified that its ongoing promotion of piped natural gas (PNG) represents a long-term energy transition strategy rather than a response to any LPG shortage. India currently produces 92 MMSCMD of natural gas against a demand of 191 MMSCMD, with continuous efforts to expand city gas distribution networks nationwide.

Authorities have urged citizens to avoid unnecessary panic or hoarding behaviors, stressing that India’s energy supply chain remains secure and resilient. The ministry has also warned that spreading false information about fuel shortages or emergency measures is a punishable offense under law.

“India’s fuel situation is stable and fully under control,” the ministry concluded, advising the public to rely solely on official sources for accurate information to prevent disruptions in the fuel distribution system.
