The Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas has firmly rejected circulating claims regarding changes to LPG cylinder refill waiting periods, clarifying that no new timelines have been implemented for consumers.
In a statement issued yesterday, the Ministry addressed widespread reports on social media and news platforms that had suggested revised booking intervals based on connection types. These viral reports had claimed consumers would need to wait 45 days for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) connections, 25 days for non-PMUY single-bottle connections, and 35 days for non-PMUY double-bottle connections.
“The existing refill booking timelines remain unchanged and continue to be 25 days in urban areas and 45 days in rural areas, irrespective of the connection type,” the Ministry emphasized in its official communication.
The Ministry’s clarification comes at a time when India’s LPG market serves over 300 million households, making it one of the world’s largest networks for cooking gas distribution. The PMUY scheme, launched in 2016, has been instrumental in expanding clean cooking fuel access to economically disadvantaged households across the country, with over 90 million connections provided so far.
Officials expressed concern that such misinformation could lead to panic bookings and unnecessary strain on the distribution system, potentially creating artificial shortages. The clarification was issued under the government’s Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav initiative, which promotes accurate information dissemination on public services.
Market analysts note that panic-driven demand surges can disrupt supply chains and lead to temporary distribution bottlenecks, even when actual supplies are adequate. Similar incidents of misinformation in the past have occasionally led to crowding at distribution centers and delayed deliveries.
“The supply chain for LPG in India is robust but operates on carefully calibrated schedules,” explained Prakash Sharma, an energy sector analyst. “Sudden spikes in bookings based on rumors can create temporary logistical challenges even when inventories are sufficient.”
The Ministry has reassured consumers that LPG stocks remain adequate throughout the country, emphasizing there is “no cause for concern” regarding availability. The statement encourages consumers to continue following established booking schedules to ensure smooth distribution for all users.
India’s LPG consumption has seen steady growth over the past decade, with current annual consumption exceeding 27 million tonnes. The country has been working to reduce import dependence, which currently stands at approximately 55% of total consumption.
To streamline the booking process, the Ministry highlighted multiple digital avenues available to consumers, including the MyLPG mobile application, WhatsApp services, SMS facilities, Interactive Voice Response Systems (IVRS), and online portals operated by the three major oil marketing companies—Indian Oil, Bharat Petroleum, and Hindustan Petroleum.
Energy sector experts suggest that such clarifications are particularly important given current global energy market volatilities caused by geopolitical tensions and supply chain disruptions in various regions. India, as the world’s third-largest energy consumer, remains sensitive to both global price fluctuations and domestic distribution challenges.
The Ministry’s prompt response to counter misinformation reflects growing government attention to the impact of viral social media content on essential services and public utilities. Officials have urged citizens to verify information through official channels before sharing or acting upon energy-related news.
