In a swift response to animal welfare concerns, the managing director of Swallow Aquatics has defended the Essex-based business against what he describes as “misinformation” following the circulation of a video online that sparked negative reviews.

Nick Seaby, who leads the family-run aquatics business, challenged claims made in a video showing allegedly unwell or dead fish at the company’s Rayleigh location. The footage, which gained traction on social media platform TikTok, prompted animal welfare concerns from viewers who subsequently left negative reviews.

“The video circulating on TikTok does not accurately represent the situation in store,” Seaby stated. “Some of the fish shown were part of a newly arrived shipment undergoing routine quarantine and treatment, and were not available for sale.”

Following the controversy, Rochford District Council conducted an inspection of the premises on April 8. Their visit coincided with an inspection by an officer from the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (CEFAS), which provides scientific advice to DEFRA.

The council’s inspection confirmed that an infection had affected two tanks connected to the same filtration system, despite proper quarantine procedures being followed for newly imported fish. Officials noted that Swallow Aquatics had “promptly identified” the issue and taken “appropriate action” to safeguard the welfare of affected fish, including administering suitable treatments.

“During the inspection, the Swallow Aquatics management team provided an overview of events that had occurred over recent days. The fish, the premises, and relevant records were examined,” a council spokesperson explained, adding that the business had maintained “accurate and comprehensive records” in accordance with their license conditions.

Swallow Aquatics, established in 1976 and celebrating its 50th anniversary this year, operates under a five-star pet shop license—the highest standard awarded in the industry. The business offers an extensive selection of aquatic life, including over 600 different freshwater tropical fish species, more than 100 tropical marine species, various goldfish and Koi varieties, and more than 40 different tropical plant species.

Seaby emphasized the company’s commitment to animal welfare, stating: “We take any concerns regarding animal welfare extremely seriously.” He noted that both Rochford District Council and CEFAS “confirmed they had no concerns regarding fish health or welfare at our store” following their independent inspections.

The managing director also refuted claims circulating online that the store had been instructed by the council to stop selling fish, describing such assertions as incorrect. He expressed concern about the impact of negative reviews from individuals who had not visited the store.

“While we respect the right to feedback, misinformation can have a significant impact on a local family business,” Seaby said, noting that the company is “currently reviewing this matter, including taking appropriate advice.”

The controversy comes at a significant moment for the business, which announced last year it had reached an agreement to sell its Rayleigh site to supermarket chain Lidl, pending planning approval. The garden center has been a fixture in Rayleigh for five decades, offering not just aquatic life but also a range of pets, pet supplies, plants, and gardening items.

As the situation develops, Swallow Aquatics has reaffirmed its dedication to maintaining high standards of animal care and welfare, with Seaby concluding: “We remain fully committed to maintaining the highest standards of animal care and welfare.”
