Experts Warn of Devastating Consequences from Rush to Identify Suspects After B.C. Shooting

In the wake of the recent Tumbler Ridge, B.C. shootings, disinformation experts are highlighting the severe impact of premature suspect identification on social media, after an innocent Ontario woman became the target of false accusations.

RCMP Deputy Commissioner Dwayne McDonald officially released a confirmed photo of the actual shooter, 18-year-old Jesse Van Rootselaar, on Friday. During the same announcement, McDonald specifically addressed unfounded accusations against a person named Zylii Strang, who has no connection to the case.

“Zylii — this did not need to happen. We know you are not involved,” McDonald stated during the press conference.

The misidentification appears to have originated from a name similarity. Van Rootselaar’s mother, Jennifer Jacobs, reportedly also went by the name Jennifer Strang. This tenuous connection, combined with reports that the shooter was transgender, led to a troubling cascade of misinformation.

Ahmed Al-Rawi, a professor in Simon Fraser University’s communication department who directs the Disinformation Project, explained that “biases and prejudices” drove people to spread images of innocent transgender individuals after learning about the shooter’s identity.

“Some people may have been seeking financial gain through viral posts, while others became entangled in conspiracy theories,” Al-Rawi noted.

The incident highlights a growing concern about the speed at which unverified information spreads online. Heidi Tworek, an assistant professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Public Policy and Global Affairs, described how social media has “massively accelerated” the longstanding phenomenon of public fixation on crime details before official information is available.

“We’ve seen in multiple cases, not just this one, these misidentifications of people that have had tremendous deleterious consequences for those innocent individuals who are not at all connected to these tragedies,” Tworek said. “The gap between how fast official investigations move versus how quickly people want information creates fertile ground for conspiracy theories.”

The personal impact on Zylii Strang has been severe. According to French news agency Agence France-Presse, Krista Strang reported that her 25-year-old daughter Zylii was “devastated” and afraid to leave her home after being wrongfully associated with the shooting.

“I don’t understand how (her profile) was linked to this crime other than my child being transgender and having (the) last name Strang,” Krista Strang told AFP.

The situation prompted B.C. resident Melissa Antoinette to launch a personal campaign across Facebook, YouTube, and TikTok urging people to remove misleading images of Strang. Antoinette reported encountering “so much hate” that she felt compelled to report numerous comments to the social media platforms.

“I feel absolutely terrible for anybody to have their image attached to any sort of horrific event or anything that they didn’t do,” Antoinette said.

The incident has also raised concerns about journalistic standards, as reporters from some media organizations reportedly shared the incorrect images before verification.

Deputy Commissioner McDonald acknowledged that the significant public attention surrounding the shooting has heightened concerns across many Canadian communities. “We are mindful that public and media response and coverage can increase false reports, but can also bring forward serious complaints,” he said.

Mark Deeley, a teacher at Tumbler Ridge Secondary School who has been praised for protecting his class during the shooting, addressed the situation on Facebook Sunday. He condemned those using the tragedy to target transgender individuals.

“I do not and will not exacerbate the intolerance with hate. My humanity refuses it,” Deeley wrote, adding that love is the only effective response to hate. “We need voices that are louder than those who would deny someone’s right to exist as their true self.”

This case serves as a stark reminder of social media’s double-edged nature during crisis events—capable of spreading crucial information rapidly but equally adept at propagating harmful misinformation that can devastate innocent lives.
