In a digital age where new parents turn to social media for advice, a troubling trend of misleading infant sleep safety information is putting babies at risk, according to a new investigation by Consumer Reports.

The report highlights how social media influencers, AI chatbots, and even retailers are sharing conflicting—and sometimes dangerous—information about infant sleep practices, potentially confusing already sleep-deprived parents.

Shayna Raphael knows the devastating consequences of unsafe sleep environments firsthand. Her daughter Claire died at daycare while sleeping on a soft adult mattress instead of in the crib where her parents believed she was being placed.

“Claire’s death absolutely was preventable,” Raphael said. “Had she been in a safe sleep environment, had she been in the crib that we thought she was sleeping in, she would still be here today.”

Following this tragedy, Raphael established the Claire Bear Foundation, a nonprofit dedicated to infant sleep safety. She now actively shares safety tips and responds to parents’ questions on platforms like Instagram and TikTok, working to counter the flood of misinformation.

Recent studies cited in the Consumer Reports investigation found that more than 90 percent of infant sleep images shared on Instagram depict unsafe situations. These images frequently show babies sleeping on their stomachs or surrounded by suffocation hazards like pillows, blankets, and stuffed animals—all practices that contradict long-established scientific guidelines for safe infant sleep.

The investigation also revealed that the problem extends beyond individual influencers. Many online retailers send mixed messages in their product listings. For example, a baby lounger might include a written disclaimer stating “this is not safe for infant sleep,” while simultaneously featuring product photos showing peacefully sleeping infants using the very same product.

“You might see a listing for a baby lounger that says in the description, ‘this is not safe for infant sleep,’ but next to that you’ll see a product photo with a sleeping baby in it,” the report notes. “So, which one is a sleep-deprived parent going to remember?”

Perhaps most concerning is the role of artificial intelligence in spreading misinformation. The investigation found that AI chat programs sometimes recommend sleep solutions that research has linked to increased infant mortality risk. These digital tools often prioritize providing answers users want to hear rather than evidence-based safety guidelines.

“Online tools like AI, search, and social media tend to give you the answers you want to hear, and those might be different from what the evidence shows is safe,” according to the report.

The consequences of this misinformation can be severe. Sleep-related deaths remain a significant cause of infant mortality in the United States, with many such deaths preventable through proper sleep practices.

The American Academy of Pediatrics and other medical organizations maintain clear guidelines for infant sleep safety: babies should sleep alone on their backs on a firm, flat surface with no soft bedding, pillows, bumpers, or toys in the sleep area. These practices should be followed for every sleep period, including nighttime sleep and daytime naps.

For new parents navigating the overwhelming amount of information available online, Consumer Reports recommends consulting with pediatricians rather than social media for sleep safety guidance. Healthcare providers can offer evidence-based recommendations tailored to individual infants’ needs.

As social media and AI continue to influence parenting practices, advocates like Raphael work tirelessly to ensure that accurate safety information reaches parents before tragedy strikes.

“Following safe sleep practices every night and for every nap can help keep your infant safe and prevent the risk of sleep-related deaths,” the report concludes—a simple message that can save lives when consistently followed.
