Over 20 Instances of Misinformation Reported During CBSE Board Exams

At least 20 cases of misinformation and rumor-mongering have been detected during the ongoing Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) Class 10 and 12 board examinations, the Ministry of Education revealed on Monday.

Union Minister of State for Education Jayant Chaudhary shared this information while responding to a written question in the Lok Sabha. He confirmed that social media platforms were promptly contacted to remove the misleading content.

“About 20 instances of misinformation and attempts to circulate rumours were reported during the examination period. Concerned media platforms were requested to remove such videos and they were promptly taken down,” Chaudhary stated.

The spread of false information during critical examination periods has become a growing concern for education authorities. Misinformation can create unnecessary anxiety among students and parents, potentially affecting exam performance and creating confusion regarding exam schedules, paper leaks, or cancellations.

To combat this issue, the CBSE has issued a comprehensive advisory warning stakeholders about the circulation of fake information and rumours ahead of the 2026 board examinations. The advisory urges parents, students, schools and other stakeholders to remain vigilant and not be misled by unverified news.

“An advisory on circulation of fake information and rumours ahead of CBSE board examinations for 2026 has been issued for parents, students, schools and all other stakeholders to remain vigilant and not to be misled by unverified news, rumours or fake news,” Chaudhary added.

The CBSE has implemented a multi-pronged approach to tackle the issue of misinformation. Chaudhary revealed that the board has been proactively collaborating with cybersecurity agencies, including the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team (CERT-In) and the Indian Cyber Crime Coordination Centre (I4C), along with representatives of major social media platforms.

These meetings aim to develop effective mechanisms for identifying and curbing the spread of examination-related fake news, which has become more prevalent with the increasing use of social media among students and parents.

“The board has a dedicated team monitoring any such misleading and fake content, taking up the issue with social media handles, getting such content removed and directly communicating with stakeholders through circulars and media briefings whenever essential,” the minister explained.

The CBSE’s vigilance reflects the increasing challenge educational boards face in maintaining examination integrity in the digital age. Social media platforms have become breeding grounds for rumors that can spread rapidly, potentially disrupting the examination process and causing unnecessary stress to students during an already pressure-filled period.

According to education experts, misinformation during exam periods has seen a significant rise in recent years, with fabricated news about paper leaks, last-minute syllabus changes, and alleged errors in question papers becoming increasingly common.

The CBSE has emphasized that it will take appropriate action against individuals found spreading false information. “CBSE undertakes appropriate action against defaulting individuals to maintain the integrity of Board examinations as and when essential,” Chaudhary stated.

The board’s efforts align with broader government initiatives to combat fake news and misinformation across sectors. The Ministry of Education has been increasingly focusing on digital literacy among students to help them identify and avoid misinformation online.

As the current examination cycle continues, authorities have urged students and parents to rely only on official communication channels for accurate information regarding the board exams.
