In a week dominated by misinformation, fact-checkers have been working overtime to debunk several viral falsehoods circulating on social media, particularly around the ICC T20 World Cup controversy and the Epstein files.

The ongoing tensions between India and Pakistan found a new battleground in the digital realm after Pakistan initially refused to play against India in the T20 World Cup before reversing their decision. This diplomatic back-and-forth spawned multiple manipulated videos featuring prominent Indian figures.

One such video allegedly showed Congress MP Shashi Tharoor praising Pakistan’s diplomatic approach regarding the T20 World Cup controversy. Fact-checkers at Newschecker determined the clip was AI-modified and completely fabricated. The sophisticated editing highlights the growing threat of deepfake technology in creating convincing but entirely fictional political content.

Similarly, a manipulated video claimed to show BCCI Vice President Rajeev Shukla stating that the Indian cricket board had requested the ICC to convince Pakistan to play against India in the tournament. This video was also confirmed to be edited, with no such statement ever made by Shukla.

The sports-related misinformation extended to another viral claim suggesting that former England cricket captain Nasser Hussain had called for a ban on Indian Under-19 star batter Vaibhav Sooryavanshi after his record-breaking century in the U-19 World Cup final against England. Investigation revealed this allegation originated from a satirical article but was being shared as legitimate news across social media platforms.

Beyond sports, the recently unsealed Jeffrey Epstein court documents continued to fuel conspiracy theories and misinformation. A particularly disturbing video showing a man discovering a pregnant woman locked inside a cage went viral with claims it was evidence from the Epstein files. Fact-checkers determined this footage actually originated from scripted YouTube entertainment content that had been misleadingly presented as authentic investigative footage.

The rise of AI-generated imagery was also evident in a viral photo purportedly showing the president of the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) women’s wing greeting someone identified as “Mohammad Deepak.” Newschecker confirmed this image was entirely AI-generated.

These instances highlight several troubling trends in the current information landscape. The sophistication of manipulated media continues to increase, with AI technologies making it increasingly difficult for average users to distinguish between authentic and fabricated content. Politically sensitive issues, such as India-Pakistan relations, remain particularly vulnerable to such manipulation.

Additionally, high-profile news stories like the Epstein case create fertile ground for misinformation as public interest and emotional reactions often outpace careful fact-checking. Content creators are deliberately blurring the lines between entertainment, satire, and factual reporting, further complicating the information ecosystem.

Media literacy experts continue to advise social media users to verify information through multiple reliable sources before sharing content, particularly when videos or images contain sensational or emotionally charged claims. The persistence of such misinformation underscores the ongoing challenges facing platforms, fact-checkers, and audiences in an era of increasingly sophisticated digital manipulation.
