In a direct response to recent political allegations, BJP leader Prakash Reddy has sharply criticized the Congress Party for what he describes as spreading false information about liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) shortages across India. Reddy characterized the opposition’s claims as particularly “unfortunate” given the genuine global energy supply disruptions stemming from the ongoing conflict in West Asia.

Speaking with news agency ANI, Reddy sought to reassure the public that despite international tensions, India’s domestic gas supply remains largely secure. “Only the commercial gas supply chain has been disrupted because of the war,” he clarified, distinguishing between industrial and household supplies.

Reddy highlighted Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s diplomatic efforts to maintain energy security, noting that several LPG shipments have successfully traversed the strategically critical Strait of Hormuz, with additional vessels expected to reach Indian shores in coming days.

“With the efforts of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, several ships have already crossed the Hormuz line, and another two or three ships are crossing today or tomorrow. They will reach India within a couple of days,” Reddy stated. He urged citizens not to panic in response to what he termed “false propaganda” from opposition parties.

The BJP leader’s comments come at a time of heightened concern over energy supplies in the region due to geopolitical tensions. The Strait of Hormuz, connecting the Persian Gulf with the Gulf of Oman and the Arabian Sea, serves as a vital shipping route for approximately 20% of the world’s petroleum, including much of the LPG imported by India.

In a significant policy move that appears to address these concerns, the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas announced on Saturday that the central government has increased gas allocations to states to 50% of pre-crisis levels. The ministry further committed to implementing an additional 20% supply increase beginning March 23.

Petroleum Secretary Neeraj Mittal communicated this development in an official letter addressed to Chief Secretaries across all States and Union Territories. The communication emphasized that the enhanced allocation is strategically targeted to support critical sectors, with particular focus on industries connected to food supply chains and essential public welfare services.

These measures come as welcome news for sectors dependent on steady gas supplies, especially food processing, pharmaceuticals, and public transportation, which have faced uncertainty due to global supply disruptions.

Data from the Petroleum Ministry suggests that public anxiety may already be easing, with reports indicating a significant decline in panic booking of LPG cylinders. According to ministry figures released Friday, approximately 5.5 million cylinder bookings were recorded on Thursday, representing a return to more normal demand patterns after a brief surge.

The government has taken a proactive approach to transparency during this period, conducting an inter-ministerial briefing to provide comprehensive updates on the availability of essential commodities, including fuel and gas supplies. These briefings form part of a broader strategy to maintain public confidence amid the complex interplay of regional tensions and global energy markets.

Energy security experts note that while India has diversified its LPG import sources in recent years, the country still remains vulnerable to disruptions in Middle Eastern supply routes, highlighting the importance of both diplomatic efforts and domestic policy measures during periods of international uncertainty.
