BJP Leader Accuses DMK, Congress of “Misinformation Campaign” on New Rural Employment Act
BJP national co-incharge for Tamil Nadu, P. Sudhakar Reddy, has launched a strong rebuttal against what he describes as a “misinformation campaign” by the DMK and Congress regarding the recently introduced VB-G Ram G Act, which replaces the long-standing Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA).
Speaking to reporters in Tiruchi on Friday, Reddy condemned both opposition parties for what he characterized as a deliberate attempt to mislead the public about the new rural employment scheme for “selfish ends” and “vote bank politics.”
“The DMK is creating a false narrative among people, claiming that with MGNREGA scrapped, rural citizens would be left without work opportunities,” Reddy stated, urging Tamil Nadu residents “not to fall into the trap of this misinformation campaign.”
The replacement of MGNREGA, a flagship program introduced by the Congress-led UPA government in 2005, has sparked significant political controversy across India. The scheme has been a crucial safety net for millions of rural households, guaranteeing 100 days of wage employment annually to every rural household whose adult members volunteer for unskilled manual labor.
According to Reddy, the new VB-G Ram G Act represents a substantial improvement over its predecessor, describing it as “transparent, visible, vibrant, meaningful and development oriented.” He emphasized that the revised program would focus on comprehensive rural development while increasing the employment guarantee from 100 to 125 days per year.
The BJP leader highlighted several key features of the new legislation, including plans for all-round village development, improved livelihood opportunities, and enhanced rural infrastructure. Reddy also claimed the digitized management framework would eliminate corruption and close loopholes that allegedly existed under the previous system.
Critics from opposition parties, however, have raised concerns about potential implementation challenges and whether the new scheme will maintain the universal employment guarantee that made MGNREGA a crucial safety net during economic downturns and the COVID-19 pandemic.
The political battle over rural employment schemes takes place against the backdrop of ongoing concerns about rural distress in many parts of India. Tamil Nadu, with its significant rural population, has historically been a major beneficiary of MGNREGA, with the scheme providing critical income support to agricultural laborers, especially during non-farming seasons.
The DMK, which currently governs Tamil Nadu, has positioned itself as a defender of welfare programs and has consistently criticized the central government’s economic policies. The party leadership has yet to respond to Reddy’s specific allegations about misinformation.
The controversy highlights the politically sensitive nature of rural welfare programs in India, where a significant portion of the population still depends on agriculture and related activities for livelihood. Any changes to established social safety nets typically generate intense political debate.
As the implementation of the VB-G Ram G Act moves forward, attention will focus on how effectively the new program addresses rural employment needs and whether it can deliver on the expanded promises made by the central government.
The political sparring between the BJP and opposition parties over rural employment schemes is likely to intensify as various state elections approach, with both sides attempting to position themselves as true champions of rural welfare and development.

This is a complex issue with valid points on both sides. While I’m skeptical of accusations of ‘misinformation campaigns,’ I’m also concerned about the potential impacts of scrapping a longstanding program like MGNREGA without a clear, evidence-based replacement. More transparency and impartial analysis would be helpful to understand the tradeoffs.
