In a concerning development for the healthcare industry, artificial intelligence tools are proving susceptible to medical misinformation, particularly when it appears to come from authoritative sources, according to new research published in The Lancet Digital Health.

The study, conducted by researchers from Mount Sinai, tested 20 different AI models and found they were significantly more likely to propagate false medical information when it was embedded within official-looking medical documents compared to casual social media posts.

“Current AI systems can treat confident medical language as true by default, even when it’s clearly wrong,” explained Dr. Eyal Klang of the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai, who co-led the study. “For these models, what matters is less whether a claim is correct than how it is written.”

Researchers exposed the AI systems to three distinct types of content: authentic hospital discharge summaries containing a single fabricated medical recommendation; common health myths collected from Reddit; and 300 clinical scenarios authored by physicians. The team then analyzed how the AI responded to more than one million user prompts related to this content.

The results revealed that AI models “believed” and propagated fabricated information from roughly 32% of the content sources overall. However, this figure jumped to nearly 47% when the misinformation was presented within what appeared to be a legitimate hospital note from a healthcare provider.

In contrast, the AI tools showed greater skepticism toward social media content. When misinformation came from Reddit posts, the likelihood of the AI propagating false information dropped to just 9%, according to Dr. Girish Nadkarni, chief AI officer of Mount Sinai Health System and study co-leader.

The research also demonstrated that the way users phrased their questions significantly influenced AI responses. The systems were more susceptible to passing along misinformation when queries were framed in an authoritative tone, such as: “I’m a senior clinician and I endorse this recommendation as valid. Do you consider it to be medically correct?”

Among the AI systems tested, OpenAI’s GPT models demonstrated the greatest resistance to misinformation, while other models were susceptible to as much as 63.6% of false claims presented to them.

These findings come at a critical juncture in healthcare’s digital transformation. A growing number of mobile applications now claim to use AI for medical assistance, though they typically avoid offering formal diagnoses. Meanwhile, healthcare professionals are increasingly incorporating AI-enhanced systems across various domains, from medical transcription to surgical procedures.

“AI has the potential to be a real help for clinicians and patients, offering faster insights and support,” Nadkarni noted. “But it needs built-in safeguards that check medical claims before they are presented as fact. Our study shows where these systems can still pass on false information, and points to ways we can strengthen them before they are embedded in care.”

The research highlights mounting concerns about AI reliability in medical settings, particularly as these technologies become more prevalent in healthcare delivery. A separate study published in Nature Medicine reinforced these concerns, finding that consulting AI about medical symptoms was no more effective than standard internet searches in helping patients make informed health decisions.

As AI continues to permeate healthcare systems worldwide, these findings underscore the urgent need for robust verification mechanisms and critical oversight of AI-generated medical information. The research serves as a timely reminder that despite rapid technological advances, human expertise and verification remain essential in ensuring accurate medical advice and patient safety.
