From dancing raccoon videos to hyperrealistic 3D street art illusions, artificial intelligence is creating content so convincing that many social media users can’t distinguish fact from fiction.

The scenario plays out daily across social platforms: A friend shares an astonishing video showing a hyperrealistic 3D hole painted on a sidewalk, causing pedestrians to panic and stumble as they approach what appears to be a dangerous pit in their path. The visual is compelling and the reactions seem genuine—until someone reveals it’s entirely AI-generated. There is no street artist, no actual artwork, and no real pedestrian reactions.

This growing phenomenon presents a social conundrum that many are grappling with: Should we inform friends when they’ve been fooled by AI creations, potentially embarrassing them, or allow them to enjoy the content without destroying the illusion?

“It’s becoming a genuine social dilemma,” explains Dr. Sarah Chen, digital media psychology researcher at Columbia University. “There’s a fine line between helpful education about misinformation and becoming that person who’s always pointing out what’s fake online. Nobody wants to be a constant bubble-burster.”

“The occasional AI raccoon video probably doesn’t warrant a correction,” Dr. Wolfe suggests. “But AI-generated content showing politicians saying things they never said? That’s a different story entirely.”

As AI technology continues its rapid advancement, society faces the ongoing challenge of preserving both critical thinking and wonder in a world where digital reality becomes increasingly indistinguishable from truth. The questions around when to correct and when to connect may only grow more complex in the years ahead.
