In an era where digital deception has become increasingly sophisticated, International Fact-Checking Day marked its tenth anniversary on April 2—strategically positioned right after April Fool’s Day. The timing offers a symbolic transition from playful deception to serious verification, encouraging critical thinking and fact-checking in our daily media consumption.

The annual observance, however, appears increasingly inadequate against the unprecedented wave of AI-generated misinformation flooding online spaces. This is particularly evident in the context of the United States-Israel conflict with Iran, where artificial intelligence has become a powerful tool for creating and disseminating false content.

Digital media experts have described the current landscape as unprecedented in scale. Timothy Graham told the BBC that “what used to require professional video production can now be done in minutes with AI tools. The barrier to creating convincing synthetic conflict footage has essentially collapsed.”

Sofia Rubison, senior editor at NewsGuard, an organization that rates the reliability of news sources globally, confirmed this assessment. Speaking on the podcast “Question Everything,” Rubison noted that the “sheer volume of fake videos and photos being spread online” represents a significant increase from previous periods.

The challenge lies not just in the volume but in the persuasive power of visual content. Research indicates people are naturally less skeptical when they believe they’ve seen something with their own eyes, making AI-generated images and videos particularly effective vehicles for misinformation.

This phenomenon creates significant risks in conflict zones, where accurate information can be a matter of life and death. AI-generated content is increasingly being monetized through what experts call the “misinformation economy,” where creators profit from engagement with false or misleading content regardless of its veracity or consequences.

A recent case highlighted this complexity when a video of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu drinking coffee at a café went viral. Originally posted as “proof of life” to counter rumors of his death, the video itself became subject to widespread claims that it was AI-generated. Many amateur online analysts labeled it a deepfake, illustrating how even authentic content now faces skepticism in an environment saturated with synthetic media.

The incident revealed another troubling aspect of the current information landscape: the limitations of AI detection tools. Even Hive, considered among the more reliable AI detectors, incorrectly assessed the Netanyahu video as having a 95% likelihood of being AI-generated. This error underscores the imperfection of automated verification systems.

NewsGuard, which publishes a weekly “Reality Check” newsletter highlighting harmful viral false claims, approached the Netanyahu video with more traditional journalistic methods. Rubison explained that her team conducted extensive verification beyond relying on AI detection tools. They confirmed the video’s authenticity by cross-referencing it with Reuters reporting and social media posts from the café itself, demonstrating that comprehensive fact-checking still requires human judgment and multiple sources.

The situation is further complicated by tools like Grok, integrated into X (formerly Twitter), which Rubison described as “one of the biggest spreaders of false claims” on the platform. Despite its limitations, Grok’s assessments are often perceived as authoritative by users, potentially amplifying rather than reducing misinformation.

As AI-generated content becomes increasingly sophisticated and widespread, experts advocate making fact-checking a daily practice rather than an annual observance. Following established fact-checking organizations and incorporating verification into regular media consumption serves two purposes: identifying specific falsehoods and developing the critical thinking habits necessary to navigate today’s complex information environment.

In a world where visual evidence can no longer be trusted at face value, the responsibility for verification increasingly falls to individual media consumers. The proliferation of AI-generated misinformation has transformed fact-checking from a specialized journalistic function into an essential everyday skill for the digital age.
