A viral video claiming to show migrants ambushing United States Marines has been debunked as a fabrication containing artificially generated imagery and false information.

The video, posted by popular real estate YouTuber Cash Jordan in May 2025, featured a deliberately misleading title that claimed to show confrontations between U.S. military personnel and migrants. Upon closer examination, fact-checkers determined that the video’s thumbnail was created using artificial intelligence and bore no resemblance to actual events.

Digital media experts who analyzed the content found clear markers of AI generation in the thumbnail image, including inconsistent lighting, unnatural proportions, and visual artifacts typically associated with AI image creation tools. The thumbnail appears designed to attract viewers through inflammatory and sensationalist imagery rather than document real events.

This incident highlights the growing concern among national security and media literacy experts about the proliferation of false information related to immigration and border security. In recent years, border issues have become fertile ground for misinformation campaigns designed to inflame tensions and drive engagement on social media platforms.

“This type of content represents a dangerous trend where creators deliberately mislead audiences for views and engagement,” said Dr. Elena Vargas, a digital media researcher at Columbia University. “The use of AI-generated imagery paired with false claims about military confrontations creates a perfect storm of misinformation that can have real-world consequences.”

YouTube’s policies prohibit content that misleads viewers about serious events, particularly those involving national security or public safety concerns. The platform has struggled to consistently enforce these policies against creators who use misleading thumbnails or titles while maintaining technically accurate content within their videos.

Jordan, who typically focuses on real estate content, appears to have ventured into more politically charged territory with this post. The shift represents a pattern seen across social media platforms where creators sometimes pivot to more controversial content to boost engagement metrics.

Border security experts note that false claims about military confrontations with migrants can contribute to a climate of fear and mistrust. Retired Border Patrol Chief Carmen Rodriguez emphasized that such fabrications “undermine public understanding of actual border operations and divert attention from substantive policy discussions.”

The spread of the video coincides with ongoing political debates about immigration policy in the United States. In recent months, several pieces of legislation related to border security have been introduced in Congress, with lawmakers from both major parties seeking various approaches to address migration patterns.

Media literacy advocates have pointed to this incident as evidence of the need for better education about evaluating online sources. “When content creators with established audiences pivot to political misinformation, they bring credibility from their previous work that makes the false claims more believable to their followers,” said Marcus Williams of the Digital Literacy Coalition.

This isn’t the first time AI-generated imagery has been used to spread misinformation about immigration issues. Since the widespread availability of generative AI tools beginning around 2022, fact-checkers have documented numerous instances where fabricated images have been presented as photographic evidence of border-related events.

Social media platforms continue to refine their approaches to identifying and labeling AI-generated content, though effectiveness varies widely. YouTube implemented policies requiring disclosure of artificially created or manipulated content in 2023, but enforcement challenges remain, particularly when creators don’t voluntarily disclose AI elements.

The incident serves as a reminder for viewers to approach sensational claims with skepticism and verify information through multiple credible sources before accepting or sharing content, especially when it pertains to divisive political topics or alleged security threats.
