Trump Accuses Media of Spreading AI-Generated “Fake News” About Iran Conflict
President Donald Trump launched a scathing criticism of mainstream media outlets Sunday night, accusing them of spreading artificial intelligence-generated videos allegedly created by Iran to misrepresent the progress of Operation Epic Fury.
In a 401-word post on Truth Social, Trump branded certain news organizations as “Corrupt” and “Radical Leftwing Press” while suggesting they should face treason charges for disseminating what he called false information.
“Iran has long been known as a Master of Media Manipulation and Public Relations,” Trump wrote. “They are Militarily ineffective and weak, but are really good at ‘feeding’ the very appreciative Fake News Media false information. Now, A.I. has become another Disinformation weapon that Iran uses, quite well, considering they are being annihilated by the day.”
The former president cited several examples of what he claimed were AI-generated propaganda, including footage showing “phony ‘Kamikaze Boats’ shooting at various Ships at Sea.” Trump insisted these clips, which he described as appearing “wonderful, powerful and vicious,” depict vessels that don’t actually exist.
Trump specifically targeted a Saturday report from the Wall Street Journal regarding five U.S. Air Force refueling planes allegedly damaged in an Iranian strike on Saudi Arabia. “The five U.S. Refueling Planes that were supposedly struck down and badly damaged, according to The Wall Street Journal’s false reporting, and others, are all in service, with the exception of one, which will soon be flying the skies,” he claimed.
The Wall Street Journal was the only media outlet Trump mentioned by name in his statement.
He also referenced a video purportedly showing the USS Abraham Lincoln aircraft carrier in flames, which AFP fact-checkers have verified as an AI-generated clip. “Not only was it not burning, it was not even shot at — Iran knows better than to do that!” Trump declared.
The former president’s accusations come amid growing concerns about the role of artificial intelligence in spreading misinformation during international conflicts. Military and cybersecurity experts have warned that AI tools can now create convincingly realistic imagery that might be difficult for the public to distinguish from authentic footage.
Trump’s allegations reflect the escalating tensions between his administration and certain media outlets, which he has frequently criticized throughout his presidency. His suggestion that news organizations should face treason charges for reporting what he considers false information represents a significant escalation in his rhetoric against the press.
The president concluded his post by expressing approval for FCC Chair Brendan Carr’s scrutiny of broadcasting licenses for what Trump termed “Corrupt and Highly Unpatriotic” media organizations.
Media watchdog organizations have yet to respond to Trump’s accusations, though many have previously emphasized the importance of maintaining press freedoms and the constitutional protections afforded to news organizations under the First Amendment.
As the conflict with Iran continues, the incident highlights the growing challenge of information verification in an era where artificial intelligence can create increasingly sophisticated fake imagery, placing additional pressure on both government officials and media organizations to authenticate information before dissemination.
