Cuban Party Leader Warns of Media Manipulation in Digital Age

Roberto Morales Ojeda, member of the Political Bureau and Secretary of Organization of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of Cuba, has issued a stark warning about the challenges of media manipulation in the modern information landscape. In a statement shared on social media, Morales Ojeda asserted that “true rebellion is thinking,” emphasizing the importance of critical analysis amid what he describes as a proliferation of misinformation.

“We live in the era with the most information channels in history, but paradoxically, also in the era where the truth has become more elusive. Never before have we been so ‘cornered’ by fallacies,” Morales Ojeda wrote, highlighting the contradiction between information abundance and truth scarcity.

The high-ranking Cuban official directed criticism at what he termed “gigantic media monopolies” that he claims are financed by major capitalist power centers. According to Morales Ojeda, these entities have “perfected the art of reducing the complexity of the world to a simple duel of good versus evil,” a simplification he suggests undermines nuanced understanding of global affairs.

The Cuban leader expressed particular concern about the sophistication of modern disinformation tactics. “The serious aspect of the matter is not only the existence of lies—which have always accompanied power—but the sophistication with which they are disguised,” he stated. Morales Ojeda argued that such strategies serve to justify military interventions, distort event coverage, and demonize nations whose perspectives diverge from dominant international narratives.

In his analysis, public passivity represents the greatest danger in this media environment. He pointed to scenarios where “millions of people repeat slogans without exercising critical thinking,” citing historical examples such as claims about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq that led to the 2003 invasion, as well as what he characterizes as narratives fostering hatred toward Cuba and other nations “without the slightest historical rigor.”

The statement reflects Cuba’s longstanding position that it faces systematic disinformation campaigns from Western media and governments. For decades, Cuban authorities have maintained that international coverage of the island nation often lacks context regarding the effects of the U.S. embargo and other external pressures on its economy and society.

“When we allow them to take away our capacity to doubt, to compare, or simply to seek other sources, we cease to be citizens and become mere pawns in a choreographed manipulation,” Morales Ojeda warned, framing media literacy as essential to civic identity.

His remarks come at a time of increased global concern about misinformation, fake news, and the role of social media platforms in shaping public opinion. Media experts worldwide have noted the challenges of information verification in an era where content can spread rapidly without fact-checking mechanisms.

For Cuba specifically, Morales Ojeda characterized understanding these “mechanisms of lies” as “an act of survival,” suggesting that the stakes of media literacy are particularly high for a country that has been at odds with U.S. foreign policy for over six decades.

The Cuban government has consistently criticized international media coverage of developments on the island, particularly regarding economic conditions, political freedoms, and human rights issues. Critics of the Cuban government, meanwhile, point to state control of media within Cuba itself as limiting information access for Cuban citizens.

Morales Ojeda’s comments reflect broader debates about media ownership concentration, information reliability, and the role of critical thinking in contemporary civic engagement that extend far beyond Cuba’s borders.
