One woman’s reaction to alcohol consumption led to a startling cancer diagnosis, highlighting an unusual symptom that medical experts say is rare but recognized.

Hollie Thursby, a 28-year-old mother of two from the United Kingdom, began experiencing peculiar symptoms after giving birth to her second son, Jack. During a routine checkup for her infant son, Thursby mentioned to doctors that she was suffering from “unbearably itchy skin.” Medical staff initially attributed this to hormonal changes common during the postpartum period.

However, Thursby noticed something far more concerning: whenever she consumed wine, even in small amounts, she experienced significant pain along the side of her neck.

“Really quite painful and uncomfortable,” she described to Kennedy News and Media. This symptom, combined with extreme fatigue and a sensation “like someone was sitting on my chest” when she laid down, signaled something more serious than typical postpartum recovery.

The young mother initially dismissed her exhaustion, assuming it was simply the natural result of caring for her children. It wasn’t until July 2025 when she discovered a hard, immovable lump on her neck that she became truly alarmed.

“It was hard, it didn’t move, but it was there,” Thursby explained. “When I turned my neck to the side, you could see it.”

Medical testing revealed the devastating diagnosis: Stage 2 Hodgkin’s lymphoma, a form of blood cancer that had spread to multiple lymph nodes. According to Cancer Research UK, this type of cancer typically manifests with symptoms including swollen lymph nodes, night sweats, weight loss, persistent itching, respiratory issues, fever, and notably, pain in the stomach or lymph nodes after alcohol consumption.

“Pain when you drink alcohol is actually a known side effect of Hodgkin lymphoma,” Thursby explained. “It’s something about the acidity in the wine and not when you drink other alcohol.”

Medical experts confirm this connection. While uncommon, alcohol-induced pain in Hodgkin’s lymphoma patients has been recognized in scientific literature since the 1950s, according to health resource Healthline. This symptom occurs when alcohol consumption triggers an inflammatory response in affected lymph nodes, creating acute pain in areas where cancerous cells are present.

The diagnosis carries particular emotional weight for Thursby, who lost her own mother to myelodysplasia, another blood disorder. In November, she began chemotherapy treatment, facing both physical challenges and emotional concerns about her children’s wellbeing.

“I grew up without a mum, and it was horrendous. I can’t do that to the boys,” she shared. “We’re all devastated, but we all know now, and we’ve got a treatment plan, which is what we need.”

Despite the difficulty of being unable to fully care for her children while undergoing treatment, Thursby maintains a determined outlook. “I’m just doing everything I can to get better for them. I keep telling myself this is only temporary, I just need to keep going.”

Thursby’s case highlights the importance of recognizing unusual symptoms and seeking medical evaluation. While alcohol-triggered pain is not among the most common cancer symptoms, it represents one of several potential warning signs that should prompt medical consultation.

Health professionals emphasize that anyone experiencing pain or other concerning symptoms after consuming alcohol should consult a doctor promptly. Early detection of Hodgkin’s lymphoma significantly improves treatment outcomes, with five-year survival rates exceeding 85 percent for many patients diagnosed in earlier stages.

For Thursby, the journey ahead involves intensive treatment, but her focus remains clear—recovering for her sons and preventing them from experiencing the childhood she endured without a mother.
