A Mexican woman’s persistent cough turned out to be something no doctor would have guessed – her own nose ring lodged deep within her lungs, dangerously close to her aorta.
Monica Deyanira Cabrera Barajas, 26, recently captured widespread attention on TikTok after sharing her harrowing medical ordeal, with her videos amassing 4.7 million views. What she initially dismissed as a reaction to changing weather was actually a medical emergency that nearly cost her life.
Deyanira, who has multiple piercings, developed what she described as a “chronic cough” that lasted over a month before seeking medical attention. She hadn’t initially noticed her septum ring was missing.
“The only theory I have, which I told the pulmonologist, is that I fell asleep, the little ball fell out, and that was it,” Deyanira explained. “I was lying on my back, I didn’t realize, and that’s how I messed up.”
Medical scans revealed the shocking truth – the metal jewelry was positioned a mere 0.5 millimeters from her aorta, the body’s primary artery. What should have been a routine 20-minute extraction turned into a complex medical emergency.
The first surgical attempt proved unsuccessful as the metal piece had begun attaching to her internal tissue. “It ended up taking an hour and 20 minutes, and they still couldn’t remove it because it was attached to my body,” Deyanira said.
Facing a second, more invasive surgery and the possibility of a fatal hemorrhage, Deyanira prepared for the worst. The night before the procedure, she wrote farewell letters to her loved ones.
“I was honestly thinking, ‘I’m going to die,'” she recounted. “It’s a horror I wouldn’t wish on anyone.”
The situation was so precarious that even her surgeon was astonished by the nose ring’s dangerous position. According to Deyanira, the doctor told her, “It seems God takes care of his creatures.” Medical professionals warned that if the metal had punctured her lung or heart before discovery, she likely would have died from a lung collapse or a perforated aorta.
This case highlights the unusual and sometimes dangerous complications that can arise from common body modifications like piercings. While rare, aspirated or ingested jewelry can pose significant health risks, especially when metal objects enter the respiratory system.
The incident also underscores the importance of properly secured body jewelry and awareness of potential risks. Medical literature has documented similar cases where loose jewelry parts have been accidentally inhaled, though few have been as dramatic or dangerous as Deyanira’s experience.
Body piercing remains popular worldwide, with septum piercings specifically seeing increased popularity in recent years. Industry standards typically recommend jewelry with secure closures to prevent such accidents, though consumer education about proper maintenance remains inconsistent.
Deyanira’s TikTok followers expressed shock at her experience, with many commenting that her ordeal “unlocked a fear I didn’t know I had.” The viral nature of her posts has inadvertently created awareness about this uncommon but serious risk associated with facial piercings.
After surviving the traumatic experience, Deyanira has permanently sworn off septum piercings. “I love piercings, and I really liked my septum piercing, but in my case, I wouldn’t get it again because of the terror I experienced,” she shared.
Medical experts suggest those with facial piercings should regularly check that their jewelry is secure, especially before sleeping, and consider removing piercings during sleep if they tend to come loose. Persistent unexplained coughing, particularly after noticing missing jewelry, should prompt immediate medical attention.
Fortunately for Deyanira, despite the harrowing experience and complex surgical intervention, she has recovered from what could have been a fatal accident.
