Mystery of Rising Adult Allergies Puzzles Health Experts

More adults are developing allergic reactions later in life, a growing health trend that has experts searching for answers. According to a 2019 study published in JAMA, nearly 50% of adults developed at least one food allergy in adulthood, challenging the conventional belief that allergies primarily emerge in childhood.

Illana Golant, founder and CEO of the Food and Allergy Fund (FAF) in New York City, experienced this phenomenon firsthand when she developed allergies in her 40s.

“That is not fully understood at all or recognized… we don’t know why they’re starting at certain points,” Golant told Fox News Digital.

The issue has gained attention at the highest levels of government. Last week, the FAF hosted a forum in Washington, D.C., attended by high-profile health officials including HHS Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., FDA Chief Martin Makary, and NIH Director Jay Bhattacharya.

One promising area of research focuses on gut health microbiomes. Dr. Makary explained in an interview that the intestine hosts over a billion different types of bacteria that normally exist in balance. However, this equilibrium can be disrupted by modern factors.

“When it’s altered by the modern-day diet and by antibiotics and other exposures… that disequilibrium can cause inflammation, health problems, and it may be implicated in food allergies,” Makary said.

The types of allergies developing in adults appear to follow specific patterns. Golant noted that there seems to be a “critical inflection point” for certain triggers.

“Seafood shellfish and tree nuts seem to be proliferating among adults,” she observed.

This observation is supported by research. A 2018 survey of over 40,000 people published in the Annals of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology identified shellfish as the top allergen among adults.

For those experiencing allergies for the first time in adulthood, the symptoms can be frightening and potentially life-threatening. Golant recounted her first anaphylactic reaction, saying, “If I didn’t know about food allergies, I would have thought I was having a heart attack.”

The rapid increase in food allergies over a relatively short period suggests environmental rather than genetic causes. “Genetics can’t change so quickly. In a generation, food allergies have skyrocketed,” Golant explained.

According to the FAF, approximately one in ten adults now suffer from food allergies, representing a significant public health concern. The organization works to raise awareness and fund research into this growing problem.

The mystery of why allergies are increasing, particularly in adults who previously consumed certain foods without issue, continues to perplex researchers. Golant believes multiple factors may be at play.

“It’s very much the perfect storm of a variety of environmental triggers,” she said. “We still don’t know which ones and if there is one primary [trigger], but my guess is that more likely, it is a perfect storm.”

As researchers continue to investigate this phenomenon, adults who develop new symptoms after consuming foods they’ve previously tolerated should consult medical professionals. Symptoms of food allergies can include hives, swelling, difficulty breathing, dizziness, and gastrointestinal issues.

The growing prevalence of adult-onset allergies highlights the need for increased funding for allergy research, better diagnostic tools, and greater public awareness of this potentially life-threatening condition that can strike at any age.
