Catholic influencer Paul J. Kim announced Thursday that his 5-year-old son Micah has died after an 11-day battle with a severe case of influenza, a heartbreaking journey he documented for his more than 300,000 Instagram followers.
In an emotional video shared on social media, Kim expressed gratitude for the outpouring of support his family received during their ordeal. “We are so proud of him,” Kim said. “I want to thank you from the bottom of my heart, as his dad, on behalf of my family, for all the ways you guys prayed and lifted us up during this time. It’s been the hardest thing I’ve ever been through in my life, and it continues to be.”
The tragedy began on December 21, when Kim first informed his followers that Micah was being transported to a hospital by ambulance following a medical emergency. Over the subsequent days, Kim provided regular updates as his son’s condition deteriorated.
Doctors described Micah’s case as an unusually severe influenza infection that eventually turned septic and triggered seizures. Medical professionals characterized the case as both rare and serious. By December 30, Kim shared that Micah had fallen into a coma as doctors and family members worked desperately to give him more time.
Despite these efforts, Micah died on New Year’s Eve. In announcing his son’s passing, Kim quoted Job 1:21, “The Lord gave, and the Lord has taken away; blessed be the name of the Lord,” adding that his son had entered “the never-ending glory, love, and peace of God.” While acknowledging their broken hearts, Kim emphasized that his family continues to rely on their faith during this difficult time.
Throughout the ordeal, Kim’s social media posts—some showing Micah in the hospital—garnered millions of views. The faith-based content creator consistently referred to his son as a fighter and “my hero” while documenting the medical battle.
Micah’s death comes amid a particularly severe flu season. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), there have been 288 pediatric flu deaths during the 2024-25 season—a record high for a non-pandemic year. Health officials note that approximately 70% of these fatalities occurred among children with underlying health conditions such as asthma, and most were unvaccinated.
Adding to concerns is the emergence of what some health experts call a “super flu” strain this season—a mutation of influenza A H3N2 known as subclade K. This highly contagious and aggressive variant has been spreading rapidly across the United States.
The CDC reports that on average, around 20,000 children under age five are hospitalized annually due to influenza, with infants under six months facing the highest mortality risk. Health authorities consistently emphasize the importance of annual vaccination as a preventive measure, particularly for vulnerable populations.
As Kim and his family begin their grieving process, he has requested privacy while also asking followers to pray for them as they learn “how to live by faith and not by sight.” The public nature of their tragedy has resonated with many online, bringing attention to both the personal dimension of pediatric health crises and the broader public health concerns surrounding this year’s particularly virulent flu season.
