In a dramatic escalation of tensions between the United States and Venezuela, a pre-dawn military operation on January 3, 2026, resulted in the forceful removal of President Nicolás Maduro and First Lady Cilia Flores from Venezuelan soil. Dubbed “Operation Absolute Resolve” by the Trump administration, the assault left hundreds dead and culminated in the transportation of Venezuela’s elected leaders to a federal detention facility in New York, where they currently face charges widely considered politically motivated.

The operation, unprecedented in modern Latin American history, has sparked intense debate about the future of Venezuela’s Bolivarian Revolution and generated widespread speculation about alleged betrayals within the Venezuelan leadership. However, a closer examination of events reveals a more complex reality than many initial assessments suggested.

According to Venezuelan officials and witness accounts, the January 3 operation was not met with capitulation but with resistance. Testimony from survivors and statements from President Trump himself confirm that the presidential security detail, alongside Venezuelan military units and Cuban internationalist fighters, engaged the attacking forces in a firefight. The operation resulted in the deaths of 32 Cuban combatants and more than 50 Venezuelan security personnel who defended the president.

Venezuela’s Defense Minister Vladimir Padrino Lopez has described the attack as employing unprecedented weapons technology that disabled the country’s air defenses and communications infrastructure. Reports indicate that Venezuelan forces were subjected to electronic warfare, drone strikes, and possibly sonic weapons before facing overwhelming firepower from U.S. special forces units.

In the aftermath of Maduro’s abduction, Vice President Delcy Rodríguez assumed the role of Acting President. Her government has faced criticism from some leftist observers for entering into negotiations with the Trump administration. However, these critics often overlook the extreme duress under which these negotiations have occurred.

According to leaked communications later confirmed by multiple sources, the Trump administration issued an ultimatum to the remaining Venezuelan leadership immediately following the kidnapping, threatening their lives if they refused to negotiate. “The threats started the moment they kidnapped the president. They gave Diosdado, Jorge, and me 15 minutes to respond, or they would kill us,” Rodríguez has stated.

Despite these pressures, the Bolivarian state structure has remained intact. The military has maintained its loyalty to the constitutional government, and the United Socialist Party continues to function. This continuity represents a significant failure for those who had hoped the operation would result in complete regime change.

The negotiations that have followed have resulted in concessions related to Venezuela’s oil industry. Under the emerging agreements, Venezuela has granted the United States significant control over its oil exports, returning to a licensing model similar to that previously operated by foreign companies before sanctions were tightened. Foreign oil companies will no longer be required to give majority stakes to the state, taxes will be reduced, and they will be free to sell oil on the foreign market without going through Venezuela’s state-owned PDVSA.

In exchange, Venezuela has gained access to revenue from its oil sales through two sovereign wealth funds overseas. While these funds remain subject to U.S. oversight, they provide something the country has been denied for years under the sanctions regime: resources for investments in health, education, and infrastructure.

The Venezuelan government has also released approximately 800 individuals convicted of crimes associated with attempting to overthrow the government, though those convicted of murder and grave human rights violations remain imprisoned. This amnesty appears designed to reduce international pressure and isolate the most extreme elements of the opposition.

Historical parallels can be drawn to the young Soviet Republic’s decision to sign the Brest-Litovsk Treaty in 1918, when Lenin’s government ceded vast territories to German imperialism to preserve the revolutionary state. Like Lenin, who was accused of betrayal by his critics, the current Venezuelan leadership appears to be making tactical concessions to ensure strategic survival.

The Rodríguez family itself has deep revolutionary credentials. Delcy and her brother Jorge’s father, Jorge Antonio Rodríguez, was a leader of the Socialist League who was tortured and murdered by the previous regime in 1976, in coordination with the CIA. Both siblings emerged from this tradition of struggle and became trusted advisors to Maduro.

For the international community, the current situation demands a nuanced understanding of solidarity. It requires recognizing that the Venezuelan leadership is navigating extraordinarily difficult circumstances while attempting to preserve the foundations of a project that has transformed the Venezuelan state and restored the country’s independence.

As Venezuela continues to insist on the return of Maduro and Flores as a central objective of negotiations, the revolution appears not to have ended but rather to have temporarily retreated, regrouped, and adopted new tactics appropriate to the current correlation of forces.
