US officials yesterday rejected claims in newly released court documents that Donald Trump had engaged in sexual activity on Jeffrey Epstein’s private Caribbean island, describing the allegations as unfounded.

The documents, part of a tranche of previously sealed filings from a 2015 defamation case involving Epstein’s former girlfriend Ghislaine Maxwell, contained testimony from a woman who claimed Trump had been on the disgraced financier’s island. The woman’s account, however, was contradicted by flight logs and other evidence, according to authorities familiar with the investigation.

“These sensationalized claims have been thoroughly investigated and found to lack credibility,” said a Justice Department spokesperson, who requested anonymity because they were not authorized to speak publicly about the matter. “There is no evidence supporting the allegation that former President Trump visited Little St. James Island.”

The documents are among hundreds of pages related to Epstein, who died by suicide in 2019 while awaiting trial on sex trafficking charges. Maxwell was later convicted of facilitating Epstein’s abuse of underage girls and is currently serving a 20-year prison sentence.

Trump, who is currently campaigning for the 2024 Republican presidential nomination, has consistently denied any improper association with Epstein. While the two were photographed together at social events in the 1990s and early 2000s, Trump has maintained that he severed ties with Epstein long before the financier’s criminal activities came to light.

“President Trump had minimal contact with Epstein and was never on that island,” said Steven Cheung, Trump’s campaign communications director. “This is just another attempt to smear him with false accusations.”

Legal experts note that the court documents, while drawing significant media attention, contain numerous allegations that were never tested in court. Alan Dershowitz, a prominent attorney who himself was accused and later cleared of involvement with Epstein’s crimes, cautioned against treating unproven claims as fact.

“These filings include hearsay and allegations that were never substantiated,” Dershowitz said. “The public should be careful about drawing conclusions from what are essentially untested assertions made in civil litigation.”

The release of the documents has reignited public interest in the Epstein case, which has implicated numerous high-profile individuals across politics, business, and entertainment. Prince Andrew stepped back from royal duties following allegations of his involvement with Epstein and one of his accusers, while other prominent figures named in various documents have faced intense scrutiny.

Victims’ advocacy groups have welcomed the release of the documents as part of a broader push for transparency in a case that many feel exemplifies how wealth and connections can shield perpetrators from justice.

“What matters most is that survivors’ voices are finally being heard,” said Jennifer Robinson of Protect Our Children, an advocacy organization for victims of sexual abuse. “For too long, Epstein’s victims were silenced while he operated with impunity due to his connections to powerful people.”

The Epstein case has become a focal point in discussions about sex trafficking, with the Justice Department acknowledging significant failures in how the case was initially handled in Florida in 2008, when Epstein received what many critics called a lenient plea deal.

Democratic Senator Richard Blumenthal, who sits on the Judiciary Committee, called for continued investigation into all aspects of the Epstein network. “The full scope of Epstein’s crimes and everyone who enabled them must be brought to light, regardless of political affiliations,” he said.

The documents’ release comes at a sensitive time in the presidential campaign cycle, with Trump seeking to solidify his position as the Republican frontrunner. Political analysts suggest that while the allegations are unlikely to sway Trump’s core supporters, they could potentially influence independent voters in a general election.

Federal investigators continue to examine Epstein’s financial dealings and associates, though they have not indicated that Trump is a subject of any ongoing investigation related to the case.

While the Epstein saga is undoubtedly a disturbing and complex issue, I’m glad to see the authorities taking the time to thoroughly investigate claims before making pronouncements. Maintaining objectivity is key.

  4. It’s concerning to see such explosive claims being made, but I’m glad the authorities have looked into them and deemed them unsupported by the evidence. We should be wary of sensationalized allegations, especially in a politically-charged climate.

  5. This seems like a politically-charged situation with competing claims. I’ll have to wait for more details and evidence to form a fair assessment. For now, I’m skeptical of unsubstantiated allegations against any public figure.
