MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Tennessee Highway Patrol (THP) has firmly denied social media allegations claiming one of its troopers struck a protester with a patrol vehicle during a recent demonstration in Memphis.

In an official statement released via Facebook, the agency addressed the circulating claims by providing video evidence from the scene that contradicts the allegations. According to THP officials, the footage shows the individual in question deliberately holding onto the front of a patrol car, then lying down in front of the vehicle, before standing up and walking away unassisted.

“The video clearly does not show the person being run over or injured, despite what has been circulating online,” the agency stated in its response to the viral claims that had gained traction across various social media platforms.

The incident highlights the increasing challenge law enforcement agencies face in the era of rapid information sharing, where incomplete or misleading footage can quickly spread before official investigations are completed. False narratives can generate community tension and undermine trust between police and the public.

The THP emphasized its commitment to constitutional rights in its statement, noting that the agency “respects and protects the right to protest peacefully.” However, they drew a clear distinction between lawful assembly and actions that create public safety hazards.

“That right does not include entering active roadways or putting people in danger,” the statement continued, addressing a growing concern among law enforcement agencies nationwide regarding demonstrations that spill onto highways and major thoroughfares.

Traffic safety experts have long warned about the dangers presented when pedestrians enter roadways, particularly during protests when visibility may be limited and emotions can run high. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, pedestrian fatalities in traffic crashes have increased significantly over the past decade, representing approximately 17% of all traffic fatalities.

In addressing the specific incident, the THP underscored the serious risks involved when protesters enter traffic zones. “Our priority is always public safety for motorists, protesters and certainly our troopers,” the agency stated. “When someone enters the roadway, it creates a serious and immediate risk, and troopers are trained to respond to prevent injuries or worse outcomes.”

The incident in Memphis comes amid a period of heightened protest activity across various American cities, with demonstrations focusing on issues ranging from social justice to environmental concerns. Law enforcement agencies nationwide have been developing protocols for managing protests while balancing public safety with First Amendment rights.

The THP’s response also reflects a growing trend among law enforcement agencies to quickly address misinformation by releasing available evidence. This proactive approach to communication aims to maintain public trust and prevent the escalation of tensions based on unverified claims.

Memphis has a significant history of public demonstrations, from civil rights protests in the 1960s to more recent movements addressing contemporary social issues. The city’s location as a major transportation hub also makes traffic disruptions particularly impactful to regional commerce and travel.

Local community leaders have not yet publicly responded to the THP’s statement or the underlying protest that led to the incident. The agency has not indicated whether the individual involved in the incident will face any charges related to obstructing traffic or interfering with police operations.

The THP continues to urge citizens to exercise their right to protest while adhering to safety guidelines and respecting traffic laws designed to protect all road users.
