South Korean officials have strongly disputed recent reports in Thai media claiming that Seoul is preparing to send troops to Ukraine. The Embassy of the Republic of Korea in Bangkok issued a formal statement Wednesday addressing what it characterized as “misleading information” that has been circulating in Thai news outlets.

The controversy emerged after several Thai publications reported that South Korea was positioning itself to deploy military personnel to the ongoing conflict zone in Ukraine. According to embassy officials, these claims have no factual basis and directly contradict South Korea’s established position on the Russia-Ukraine war.

“The Republic of Korea has maintained a consistent policy of providing humanitarian and non-lethal aid to Ukraine, but has never considered sending troops to the conflict,” said an embassy spokesperson in the statement. “We request that media outlets verify such sensitive information with official sources before publication.”

The embassy emphasized that South Korea’s support for Ukraine has been limited to humanitarian assistance, financial aid, and non-lethal equipment. Since the Russian invasion began in February 2022, South Korea has provided approximately $150 million in assistance to Ukraine, including medical supplies, emergency relief items, and economic stabilization funds.

Foreign policy experts note that the misreporting comes at a sensitive time in East Asian geopolitics. South Korea has been carefully balancing its response to the Ukraine crisis, mindful of its own security concerns with North Korea and complex relationships with both Russia and China.

Dr. Kim Jae-sung, an international relations professor at Seoul National University, explained the broader context: “South Korea’s position on Ukraine reflects its commitment to the international rules-based order while avoiding direct military involvement that could escalate tensions. The false reports in Thai media risk creating unnecessary diplomatic complications.”

The incident highlights growing concerns about misinformation in international reporting on the Ukraine conflict, which has become increasingly susceptible to distortion as the war enters its third year. Media watchdog organizations have documented a rise in unverified claims and false narratives about various countries’ involvement in the conflict.

Thailand and South Korea maintain strong bilateral relations, with trade between the two countries reaching approximately $13 billion annually. South Korea is also a significant source of foreign investment in Thailand’s manufacturing sector, particularly in electronics and automotive components.

The Korean embassy’s swift response reflects Seoul’s concerns about how such misinformation might affect public perception in Thailand, where Korean cultural and economic influence has grown substantially over the past decade.

“Accurate reporting on sensitive geopolitical issues is essential for maintaining mutual understanding between our nations,” the embassy statement continued. “We remain committed to transparent communication about the Republic of Korea’s foreign policy positions.”

Regional analysts suggest that the misreporting may have stemmed from confusion over South Korea’s recent increases in defense exports to various European countries, which have grown significantly since the start of the Ukraine conflict. While South Korea has expanded arms sales to Poland and other NATO members, these transactions do not include deployment of Korean military personnel.

The Thai Foreign Ministry has not yet issued any formal comment on the Korean embassy’s statement. However, media organizations in Thailand have begun to issue corrections to their earlier reports.

This incident serves as a reminder of the challenges in accurate international news reporting during complex global conflicts, where misinformation can quickly cross borders and potentially impact diplomatic relations. It also underscores South Korea’s careful positioning on the global stage as it navigates its role as an emerging middle power with significant economic interests across multiple regions.
