EXCLUSIVE: Sean Combs’ Mother Condemns Netflix Documentary as “Intentionally Misleading”
In a striking rebuke of Netflix’s chart-topping docuseries “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” Janice Combs has come forward to denounce what she describes as fabricated narratives about her son and their family life.
“I am writing this statement to correct some of the lies presented in the Netflix, Sean Combs: The Reckoning, released on December 2, 2025,” the octogenarian mother of the incarcerated music mogul told Deadline. “These inaccuracies regarding my son Sean’s upbringing and family life is intentionally done to mislead viewers and further harm our reputation.”
Having attended nearly every day of her son’s two-month trial this summer—where he faced charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering—Janice Combs particularly objects to a pivotal scene in the documentary. The series, produced by Combs’ long-time rival Curtis “50 Cent” Jackson and directed by Alexandria Stapleton, includes testimony from Kirk Burrows claiming that Sean Combs once slapped his mother during a conversation following the tragic City College event on December 28, 1991.
“The allegations stated by Mr. Kirk Burrows that my son slapped me while we were conversing after the tragic City College events on December 28, 1991, are inaccurate and patently false,” Combs declared. The incident she references resulted in nine deaths and approximately 30 injuries at an overcrowded event promoted by her son at a school gymnasium.
“For him to use this tragedy and incorporate fake narratives to further his prior failed and current attempt to gain what was never his, Bad Boy Records is wrong, outrageous and past offensive,” she stated.
The 56-year-old Sean Combs, currently serving a four-year prison sentence at Fort Dix FCI in New Jersey, was convicted in July on two counts of transportation to engage in prostitution. Sources indicate Janice Combs last visited her son at the facility approximately ten days ago, shortly before Thanksgiving.
Combs’ legal troubles extend beyond his current incarceration. With an expected release date in early June 2028, his defense team has secured a fast-track appeal. Meanwhile, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department has opened a new investigation into claims of sexual battery against him, adding to dozens of pending civil cases.
The documentary controversy intensified when Sean Combs himself issued a cease-and-desist letter dated December 1, calling the series a “hit piece” and alleging “corporate retaliation” from Netflix co-CEO Ted Sarandos. Combs’ legal team claimed the documentary was produced after Combs supposedly declined Sarandos’ earlier attempt to create a different documentary about him. Despite these legal threats, no formal lawsuit has been filed yet.
Netflix quickly defended the documentary upon its December 2 release, stating: “This is not a hit piece or an act of retribution. Curtis Jackson is an executive producer but does not have creative control. No one was paid to participate.” The streamer also maintained that behind-the-scenes footage of Combs strategizing before his arrest was obtained legally.
In her statement to Deadline, Janice Combs further challenged the documentary’s portrayal of her parenting. “In the documentary, I am portrayed as an abusive parent. This is untrue. As I have stated previously, I was a single mother, raising my son, I held three and even four jobs in an attempt to provide a comfortable upbringing and quality education for my child.”
She emphasized her son’s character and their relationship: “Sean has always been an industrious, goal oriented, over achiever… Sean has been a dutiful son always ensuring that I was cared for and vigilantly managing my medical care, as well as providing financial support.”
Janice Combs concluded her statement with a direct demand: “I am requesting that these distortions, falsehoods and misleading statements be publicly retracted.”
Netflix did not respond to Deadline’s request for comment regarding Janice Combs’ statement.
The controversy highlights the ongoing tension between documentary filmmaking and the subjects portrayed, particularly in cases involving high-profile legal proceedings and personal family dynamics.
