Unfounded Rumors Cloud Investigation into Nancy Guthrie’s Disappearance

The disappearance of 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, mother of “TODAY” show co-host Savannah Guthrie, has sparked a wave of false claims and unfounded accusations on social media, complicating an already challenging investigation.

As authorities continue their search efforts, the Pima County Sheriff’s office and Guthrie’s family have been forced to issue statements debunking numerous rumors circulating online. The case highlights the growing problem of misinformation during high-profile investigations.

One particularly damaging rumor gained traction when journalist Ashleigh Banfield claimed on her “Drop Dead Serious” true crime podcast that a family member was being considered a potential suspect. Banfield, citing an anonymous law enforcement source, specifically named Tommaso Cioni, a relative of Guthrie’s, as a “prime suspect.”

The accusation prompted a swift response from Zach Lind, Guthrie’s nephew and drummer for rock band Jimmy Eat World. “Tommaso is an amazing guy,” Lind wrote on social media. “Absolutely no way he’s involved. Shame on Banfield for spreading this garbage.”

Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos addressed the rumors directly during a Thursday news conference, condemning the speculation. “It’s reckless to report that someone is a suspect when they could very well be a victim,” Nanos stated. “You can actually be doing some damage to the case, but you can do some damage to that individual too. Social media is kind of an ugly world sometimes.”

The Guthrie family’s experience reflects a troubling pattern in high-profile cases, where internet sleuths and amateur detectives rush to formulate theories that can have serious consequences for innocent people.

In a similar case, a University of Idaho professor became the target of online conspiracy theories following the murders of four students in 2022. Despite having no connection to the crime, the professor faced harassment and safety concerns after a TikTok user falsely claimed she was involved. The actual suspect, Bryan Kohberger, was arrested months later.

Even more tragically, following the 2013 Boston Marathon bombing, internet users wrongly identified Sunil Tripathi as a suspect. Tripathi, who had nothing to do with the attack, died by suicide amid the false accusations. The Tsarnaev brothers were later identified as the actual perpetrators.

Benjamin Lyons, an associate professor of communications at the University of Utah, explains why misinformation spreads so quickly in these cases. “Because social media is optimized for engagement, emotional and shocking content spreads much faster than news updates,” Lyons said. “Official sources have to compete side-by-side with rumors and unverified accounts.”

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department has urged the public to refrain from sharing unverified information. “Detectives are working closely with the Guthrie family,” the department stated. “While we appreciate the public’s concern, the sharing of unverified accusations or false information is irresponsible and does not assist the investigation.”

While social media occasionally proves helpful in investigations—as in the case of Gabby Petito, where YouTubers’ footage provided valuable leads—criminal justice experts caution against amateur sleuthing. Adam Scott Wandt, a criminal justice professor, notes that while public tips can be valuable, law enforcement professionals possess the skills and equipment necessary to properly vet information.

For families like the Guthries, these unfounded accusations compound an already painful situation. Lind made this clear in his social media response: “Imagine going through everything this family is going through and also having to contend with vile humans who post stuff like this. Unreal. Annie and Tommy are amazing people, dedicated parents who also love and care for Nancy on a daily basis.”

As authorities continue their search for Nancy Guthrie, the case serves as a sobering reminder of the real-world harm that can result when speculation overtakes facts in the digital age, particularly during sensitive ongoing investigations.
