Pakistan Launches Deadly Airstrikes on Afghan Facility, Kabul Claims 200 Dead

Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan escalated dramatically Monday when Afghan officials accused Pakistani forces of launching airstrikes on a drug rehabilitation hospital in Kabul, reportedly killing more than 200 people. The allegations mark a significant intensification in the deadliest border conflict between the neighbors in years.

Afghanistan’s Health Ministry spokesman Sharafat Zaman said the attack completely destroyed the treatment facility. “All parts of the drug treatment hospital have been destroyed,” Zaman stated in a televised interview later shared on social media by Taliban government spokesman Zabiullah Mujahid.

Local television broadcasts showed firefighters battling flames amid the rubble of what appeared to be a destroyed building. Mujahid condemned the strike as a violation of Afghanistan’s territory, stating that most casualties were patients undergoing treatment at the facility.

Pakistan swiftly rejected the accusations. Information Ministry officials insisted their military operation “precisely targeted military installations and terrorist support infrastructure” used by Afghan Taliban and Pakistan-based militants in Kabul and Nangarhar provinces. The ministry characterized Afghanistan’s claims as “false and misleading” and designed to cover up what Pakistan describes as “illegitimate support for cross-border terrorism.”

“No hospital was targeted in Kabul,” said Mosharraf Zaidi, spokesman for Pakistani Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, dismissing the allegations as baseless.

The reported attack came amid escalating border hostilities that began in late February. Earlier Monday, Afghan officials reported that four people, including two children, were killed and ten wounded in southeastern Afghanistan during an exchange of fire along the border. They claimed mortar shells fired from Pakistan overnight struck villages in Khost Province, destroying several homes.

The previous day, Pakistan had reported that a mortar fired from Afghanistan hit a house in northwestern Bajaur district, killing four family members and wounding two others, including a 5-year-old child.

The conflict has generated drastically different casualty reports from both sides. Pakistani Information Minister Attaullah Tarar claimed Sunday that the Pakistani military has killed 684 Afghan Taliban forces, an assertion firmly rejected by Afghanistan’s Taliban-led government, which insists casualties are far lower. Meanwhile, Afghanistan’s Defense Ministry maintains that its forces have killed more than 100 Pakistani soldiers.

Pakistani President Asif Ali Zardari has described the situation as an “open war,” stating that Afghanistan’s Taliban administration crossed a “red line” by allegedly deploying drones that injured several civilians in Pakistan last week.

The hostilities began when Afghanistan launched cross-border attacks in response to Pakistani airstrikes inside Afghanistan that Kabul said killed civilians. These clashes disrupted a Qatar-brokered ceasefire established in October following earlier deadly confrontations.

The core dispute centers on Pakistan’s accusations that Kabul harbors militant groups, particularly the Pakistani Taliban (Tehrik-i-Taliban Pakistan or TTP), which Pakistan claims carry out attacks inside its territory. The Taliban government in Kabul consistently denies these allegations.

Just hours before Monday’s reported strike, the UN Security Council unanimously adopted a resolution calling on Afghanistan’s Taliban rulers to immediately strengthen their efforts to combat terrorism. While the resolution didn’t specifically name Pakistan, it “condemned in the strongest terms all terrorist activity including terrorist attacks” and extended the UN political mission in Afghanistan for three months.

The deteriorating situation raises concerns about regional stability and the potential for wider conflict in a region already struggling with economic challenges, political instability, and the humanitarian consequences of the Taliban’s return to power in Afghanistan in 2021.

International observers are closely monitoring the situation, with diplomatic efforts likely to intensify should the conflict continue to escalate between the nuclear-armed Pakistan and Taliban-controlled Afghanistan.
