NC Files Criminal Complaint Against YouTuber Over Lineage Classic Allegations

South Korean game developer NC has taken legal action against a YouTube content creator for allegedly spreading misinformation about the company’s iconic online game, Lineage Classic. The criminal complaint, filed Thursday at the Gangnam Police Station, targets the operator of the YouTube channel “Yeonglaegi” on charges of business obstruction and disseminating false information.

According to NC, the YouTube channel broadcast claims that the company tolerated users of illegal programs within the game while unjustly penalizing those who reported such violations. “These claims have been confirmed as clearly false based on internal data analysis and reviews by both in-house and external experts,” NC stated in its complaint.

The gaming giant expressed concern about the rapid spread of what it considers misinformation to “an unspecified number of people,” causing significant confusion within the Lineage Classic player community. NC argues that these allegations have damaged its service credibility and undermined its ongoing efforts to combat cheating and illegal programs.

In February, the channel “Yeonglaegi” published a video titled “Why Macro Bot Farms Won’t Disappear from Lineage Classic,” which allegedly suggested that the company’s enforcement actions against cheaters were ineffective or deliberately inadequate. This appears to have been the catalyst for NC’s legal response.

The company defended its record on combating illegal software use, stating that since Lineage Classic’s launch, it has sanctioned nearly six million accounts—5,971,757 to be precise—across 105 separate enforcement actions. NC emphasized its commitment to “creating a smooth and stable playing environment” for legitimate players.

This dispute highlights the ongoing challenges faced by online game operators in South Korea and globally as they battle against unauthorized third-party programs that can provide unfair advantages or automate gameplay. Such programs, commonly known as “bots” or “macros,” can disrupt game economies and diminish the experience for rule-abiding players.

South Korea’s online gaming industry, valued at over $6 billion annually, has historically taken a strong stance against cheating and illegal software use. The country’s gaming market is highly competitive, with companies like NC, Nexon, and NCSoft dominating the landscape and aggressively protecting their intellectual properties.

Lineage, first released in 1998, remains one of South Korea’s most successful gaming franchises, with the “Classic” version representing a return to the game’s roots that has proved popular with nostalgic players. The longevity of the franchise makes it particularly valuable to NC, explaining the company’s vigorous response to allegations that might tarnish its reputation.

The case also underscores the growing influence of gaming content creators and the potential legal risks they face when criticizing major industry players. As YouTube and other platforms have become important venues for gaming discourse, the line between commentary and potentially actionable claims has become increasingly significant.

Legal experts note that South Korean defamation laws differ from those in Western countries, with truth not always serving as an absolute defense if statements are deemed to have damaged reputation or business interests.

The Gangnam Police Station has not yet commented on the status of the investigation. Neither NC nor the YouTube channel operator has released additional statements since the filing of the complaint.
